For me most of the otc fading products only work up to a certain point then I'm still left with spots. I decided to stop wasting time and money going that route and started using tretinoin (Retin-A). Along with using sunscreen everyday, that has faded and kept my spots away. I buy my tretinoin from alldaychemist and no Rx is needed to get it from them.

Also available w/o a Rx from ADC is a 4% hydroquinone (HQ) cream which is highly effective at fading spots. There is one other product which contains a combo of HQ (2%) and tretinoin (.025%) in one convenient cream.

The strongest OTC with 3% hydroquinone is Nadinola Extra Strength Formula:

@SilleeMee. ITA. I also use a Vit. C serum in the morning routine...even days I don’t wear any makeup.

OBAJI (not drugstore, but worth the price for it’s effectiveness after 6 wks.) pulled their hydroquinone cream a few yrs. ago because of the high % of HQ. It’s now available again w/o HQ...other ingredients that are more safe for fading. You mix it w/ Retin A (50/50) before application.

@Sue98 - This is not a drug store product, but I wanted to mention it to you because I've been using it for a month now and have been thrilled with the results.  It's Serious Skin Care's Vitamin C pre-soaked pads from HSN.  I've never used a vitamin C product before and was completely amazed at how clear and bright my face is now.  This product really faded my discoloration.  (I've also been using Retin A for many years now).

That Obaji Nu-Derm Clear Fx contains the active arbutin. That ingredient is a derivative of HQ but it exhibits less of the cytotoxic effects of it's primary HQ and it's efficacy is comparible to that of HQ.

Products containing kojic acid are also effective for reducing hyperpigmentation. In fact better than arbutin.

What's available for dark spots?

I use the OBAGI skin care line from the dermatologist. It has lightened any freckles I had.......but it took a while. I have not found any drugstore brand that did the same.

@Effie54  I used the entire line about 10 yrs. ago. Did a great job. Be sure to not just use it on face...blend onto neck and EAR LOBES. If not, there may be marks of delineation.
