She's not even funny; just sad. And so was her treatment of Dr. Brandt.I think some of you have missed some of the posts. One in particular called out Tina Fey for her, and I paraphrase, merciless harassment of SP.
So yes I do think that dragging the writer of spoof into this is, for many but not all, a political statement.
My goodness, there are constant spoofs and parodies of all sorts of well-known people. And as I said earlier, I wouldn't have even had a clue who they were spoofing because I'd never heard of Dr. Brandt before seeing his name here occasionally.
And anything can exacerbate a person's mental illness. That in no way translates into cause and effect, and to say that it does is irrational. And to call Tina Fey names and state that she caused his death (yes, a poster did say that) is ignorant and cruel.
Okay: "Great job Tina Fey! /sarc. You drove someone to suicide. What a mean, overrated nag she is! I guess that's her "20"."
I don't see any "possibly contributed" in your quote, just absolute certainty. Black-and-white certainty.
How nice it must be to judge with such unsupported conviction.

To me, and this is my personal opinion no show was to blame for Dr Brandt suicide. Unless, the person put the rope around his neck, or ignored his pleas for help, no one is to blame. At least yet. Dr Brant took his life, and his illness depression was the contributing factor. Believe me, I have had 2 family members commit suicide, and I have known people over the years who have. Depression eats away at the very core of the depressed's life. Usually there are contributing factors such as alcohol, drugs, over medication or under medication of depression drugs. In the case of my one cousin, she was bipolar, and also drank during spurts of frenzy. It was inevitable. There were people in the other room, as she went into a bedroom and shot herself. She had stole a gun. Everyone blamed themselves for years. But the truth is, there is no stopping a person with suicide in the brain. They plan it long before they do it. She appeared well to others, and was more clear before she died. She was very intent on killing herself, and did not want anyone to know her thoughts.
I am sure Dr Brandt kept his condition hidden. That is the nature of the disease, especially if you have a business. I am also sure had Tina Fey even known Dr Brandt was depressed or suffering from this disease she would have been more sensitive. Comedy is comedy, there are no holds barred. Everyone is game. Sometimes it is funny, sometimes not.
Many times depressed people are taking meds they shouldn't, or are taking meds don't that work. Even worse, contraindicated for a misdiagnosed disease. Or they over medicate (men do this a LOT) thinking more is better. There can be delusions before a suicide as well, which blows everything out of proportion!
I think some of the speculation of guilt here is not fair. To Dr Brandt, or the millions who suffer from this devastating disease.
JMHO and nothing else

Shoekitty-- do you think they should 'go on with the show' in light of what Dr. Brandt did?
Do you believe sources that say he was bothered by the portrayal?
I see where Martin Short didn't go to a premier after this happened Sunday.

Lucky,
I think he might have been bothered by the portrayal, but many people are bothered by things said about them. I think Martin Short did not go to the premier for a few reasons. Sometimes they just don't go, and he probably didn't want to draw attention. My granddaughter missed a premier in Santa Monica for a film she did, she was really ill.
Many celebrities have had awful skits and such done about them, and yes it hurts. Look at Michael Jackson, Lindsey Lohan, and Mariah Carey was so distraught after her film Glitter was panned, and they made such fun of her she checked into a hospital!
Joan Rivers herself has been the butt of many SNL skits, as have Gerald Ford, the Olson sisters.
I think Dr Brandt was so depressed things were distorted and the real was unreal if you know what I mean.

It's so sad that he took his life. The Good Morning American report said he was upset about the portrayal of the doctor on the TV show.

ShoeKitty, I am so sorry for your losses. You have a very sad and personal knowledge about depression. It is plain that you have also educated yourself.
I worked for a while as a psych nurse. Your post perfectly explains the pain experienced by those who suffer from depression. In addition, it is very hard to find the correct med and dosage that will be effective for the patient.
Thank you for sharing your story and helping us all to understand a little more about those who deal with mental illness. The entire family and friends of the patient also suffer more than I can even imagine.

Shoekitty, I have to say I'm sorry about the suicides in your own family. That's got to be shocking and heartbreaking to say the least.
I know many people are portrayed, I never saw the show in question. I guess I'm surprised Dr. Brandt did. Unless it was brought to his attention.
It's too bad they didn't just switch it up to not make is seem so obvious who they were spoofing. That wouldn't have been hard to do, you know?
I hope they don't continue to show the skit or re-run it, it seems like it would be beyond tasteless. Like they would just be trying to get viewership up for ratings.
Re: Your granddaughter being to sick to attend an award show. My cousin was an executive producer on (at one period in time) the most watched television show/series in the world and I don't think it was ever up for an Emmy! lol.

My thoughts: A- no one can ever know who is mentally stable and who is not. Ever.
B- we live in a new era. Comedy can now equate to 'bullying by permission'. The world is trying to extinguish bullying, yet comedians make fun of others 'for a laugh'. Terrible message to send young people. Bullying is bullying. PERIOD.
C- Dr Brandt was a wonderful caring man. For him, and for so, so many 'celebrities' who are injecting all sorts of chemicals into their bodies in search of perfection are (in my opinion) really entering into unchartered territory. The 'injectable fountain of youth' chemicals do not have any long term studies yet (because that whole field exploded so fast) regarding "just what, if any, damage does it do to the human body, long term--- mentally or physically"
More will come out I imagine re Dr Brandt, but a skit is not what tossed him over the edge. He may have already been on the edge already, it happened to be a Tina Fey skit that tipped him over and out. We (general public) will never know. He may have been at the point of despair that burning his toast could have been the tip point.
I still, however, think comedy needs to shift to something different than people bashing. That is not OK anymore. RIP DR BRANDT
