Compliment a complete stranger on the street/in public? I'm always curious when a vendor claims that "people stop me on the street to ask what fragrance I'm wearing, or where I purchased my jeans, etc."

I can remember maybe two times in my life that a stranger has come out of the blue to compliment me and ask me where I got something. I frequently notice someone that looks or smells good, but I would (almost) never think to approach them to tell them.

I'm an introvert and tend to err on the side of caution when interacting in public, so maybe I'm more the exception than the norm. I'm always generous with my compliments to friends, family, co-workers, and might be more likely to strike up a conversation while waiting in a checkout line, but I don't think I would ever just walk up to someone out of the blue.

Do you?

I have complimented strangers before. Usually on something they're wearing -- never on their make-up.

All the time! I know it makes me feel good so I do it to others!

The other day at the store I was looking and thinking about buying a handbag and this young lady came over and oohed and aahed over it. She was was sharply dressed and had a sense of style.

I picked up one and told her ""you made up my mind because you liked it and you are so stylish"" She gave me such a big smile and started chatting about other things she liked. She told me I made her day.

You never know how you can touch someone who really needs it.

I give compliments to strangers, generally on what they are wearing or even a smile. Yesterday, I complimented a young girl on her hat. It put a big smile on her face and she said thank you. She felt good and I felt good.

Also, I receive compliments. Gives a little extra bounce in my step. If I can do the same for someone, it pleases me. Only time, I have to stop and think, is when someone says, you smell good, can I smell you. It's creepy at first but I appreciate the gesture.

In the good ole days I was complimented several times when I wore Amazing Grace perfume. They were men and I was always caught a little off guard when they said something about how clean I smelled. Wish they would go back to the original, not for the compliments, but I just really liked it myself. Just recently I had a woman standing in line behind me and she said, I usually don't like Vera Bradley prints but that one is really pretty. It was a gift from my mother. I don't know the name of the print. If I like something, I will always compliment someone.

Back in college, I once complimented a fellow student on her choice of eyeshadow. Big mistake. She said that she wasn't wearing any. {#emotions_dlg.scared}

As for fragrance, I guess I would be complimented if someone said that I smelled good. But if someone just asks what perfume I'm wearing, I'm not so sure. Wink

Rarely. And absolutely never on appearance or the way someone smells. That's too personal. I have on occasion complimented a woman on her shoes or her bag.....usually because I've been staring at her shoes or bag and she noticed.

I do too and I get them in return, I think it's nice. Last week was a good one for me for stranger compliments, ha, ha, and two were from men that I would think wouldn't usually notice a hat and a vintage hat suitcase, but they did. I need to go to Vegas more often! I like to compliment people on customer service when it's great, sometimes I'll call their supervisors. I complimented an employee by email at DirecTV and they wrote back how happy they were about it. I'll tell people on the street they look nice or have a great haircut.
