Darker toned powder foundation instead of matte bronzer - anyone try?

I watched a YouTube makeup guru on contouring and she recommended purchasing a powder foundation in a color deeper than your skin tone instead of a bronzer. I was intrigued because there are so many more shades available if you do this instead of buying a "bronzer" product. Has anyone done this and have a recommendation for a talc-free brand with good blendin properties?
