ComPact 2020 – Jettison January

The ComPact is a commitment to simplify, pare down, streamline. It began as a way to gain some control over our collections of beauty products. Why were we amassing so much, yet not using what we were buying? Why were we always searching for the next new product? Why couldn't we just find what worked for us and stick with it?

The ComPact, however, is not restricted to beauty items. If you have a collection you want to address, do it here. Choose an area you want to work on, and track your progress on the ComPact thread. Members will offer tips and encouragement.

Choose one of our many mantras (“One by one until they’re done!” “We are SPAHHHRRRTAN!!!” “Not until you really have to.” “Buy less, choose well, make it last.” “Resist the propaganda.” "If it's high, I don't buy!" “When in doubt, do without!” “Start where you are, use what you have, do what you can.”  "Only the store, online no more!" “Shoplighters of the World Unite!”) or create a new one and share it. Target items each month to toss, donate, or use, and post your “chopping block” -- or “hit list.” Post temptations, post victories.

They say it takes 30 days for something to become a habit: Let's see if taking the ComPact one month at a time works for you.

Hey, all you HEPcats and HEPdogs! We had discussed making the Healthy Eating thread a monthly jam session, so I just went ahead and did a little improvisation.

This is an invite to our crazy crib where you can come and break it down! I say we go 18 karat on this and really swing. If healthy eating’s not your bag, no problem. But if it is, I dig.

It’s cool, I’m booted, let’s jump!

Re: ComPact 2020 – Jettison January

Happy 2020, Compactors!  🎉

I think for my item to be tossed I'm choosing an older Aran sweater.  I still have several, and while they're beautiful and I love them, they're just not practical for me anymore.  So, instead of taking this one to the cleaners, I'm just going to toss it.  Or maybe put it in the cat room since they seem to like wool to sleep on.

The last several posts in the December thread were very interesting.  Sounds like a lot of us are actually getting serious about "jettisoning" a lot of our bad habits.  For me, like several of you, the focus will be on health.  Yesterday I polished off the last of the junk food and the few candies I had went into the trash.  Good timing, since trash day is tomorrow and I will take the bin to the road today.  If it's not in the house, I can't eat it.  I really feel for those of you who have spouses and/or kids that eat things you want to avoid.  It's really hard to not indulge when you've had a rough day and it's sitting right there in the cabinet beckoning you!

I also have to get off my rear and start doing my exercises more regularly.  I've gotten to be a slug lately.  I used to be up and going while it was still dark outside.  But one day I wondered why in the world I was doing that.  So I lounge around in bed, but then I when I get up I piddle around the house instead of getting my butt in gear.  That needs to change.  Not drastically, but meaningfully and intentionally.

@just bee , you're certainly on the ball this morning with this new thread.  Either you had a bad night or you're intent on starting this new year out right!👍

Re: ComPact 2020 – Jettison January

I urge everyone to go back to December's thread and read the final posts.  There was a definite theme there.  The words "judicious" and "junk" came up a lot.

But there's a reason they don't describe this January.

Judicious July!  That was 2017.

Junk It June!  That was 2019.

Been there, done that.  Now it's time to really lighten the load.  What's weighing down your ship?

Mayday!

I'm piddling!

I turned on yoga and Classical Stretch, then sat down to post January's thread.  I need to step away from the computer and rewind the shows!

I'll be back...

😱

Ooh, a little too depressing visual for me.  Can we find a more uplifting way to describe our desire to lighten our load?  In fact, now that I think about it, even the word "purge" has a negative connotation.

How about looking at this from a different viewpoint?  I wonder if we all have been concentrating too much on the negative, and thus unintentionally beating ourselves up over past purchases and choices.  Can't we do this in a positive way?  It may work better.  Like, instead of thinking of all the delicious junk food we have to give up, think of how much better we're going to feel, and therefore, how much more we will be able to do and enjoy.

We  need to figure out how to make the things we want to do be fun, instead of concentrating on how much we're "giving up". Nobody wants to do anything that smacks of drudgery, work, or sacrifice.  But we all like the fun, happy stuff!  Isn't that why we buy or eat in the first place--to try and make ourselves happy?

Re: ComPact 2020 – Jettison January

Happy New Year everyone!

I am so glad to be able to talk to all of you, my "online friends".

I have a few more days to splurge before I try to start my new healthy eating plan. I still have junk in the house but I just need to learn how to say "no". Sugar and sweets, especially chocolate, are my main downfall, and I think I just need to quit cold turkey for a few weeks and get it out of my system. I definitely think that the sugar is an addiction, the cravings are real, and I feel like I need to detox. I know it will be hard but I'm hoping I'll feel better in the end.

Hubby just bought a brand new, fancy treadmill and I need to make it a point to try to use it and get off my behind at least a couple of days a week. Even if it's only for 15 minutes, I am so out of shape and need to try something.

After all my talk last week about not refilling my open pantry shelves hubby and I went to the store last week and filled 2 grocery carts with "stuff". Thing is, even with the 2 full carts the freezer and the pantry shelves are not overstuffed. I guess we were down more than I thought.

I actually don't mind having the excess on the shelves in the basement, as long as it's not congesting the fridge, freezer or upstairs pantry, I'm ok with it. But it has to be something that we will actually use. I did take some stuff from the upstairs pantry downstairs too because it was just getting too full feelig. I think I might do that with some of the extra sweets too. Hopefully out of sight, out of mind.

Re: ComPact 2020 – Jettison January

@geezerette - excellent points! I definitely need to look at this as a positive, what am I going to gain vs what I am giving up. Thanks for the idea!
