Re: ComPact 2019 – Jaded July

Rentals are small and you won't need much.
Glad you have a fence for WGD. Back yards are nice especially for sitting and chilling.

Don't envy you because moving can be exhausting! You have to sort so much out. Major pain! Probably want everything in it's place, like yesterday. Lol
Hang in there!

This is a cute little house (with its share of quirks) in a nice neighborhood that was developed in the mid-80s.  Lots of "old" growth so it looks green around here.  Had a mug of Harney & Sons this morning (somehow I timed my order perfectly -- a first -- and tea was delivered yesterday with all of our other things) and stood in the yard with the dog.  Saw a hawk in the tree across the street.  This is starting to feel normal.

We're about three miles from our house.  I can go over there and water the yard before they rip my plants out of the ground.  Sigh.  I'm trying to spin this so that it's a good thing.  A yard with native plants that are easier to maintain.  Maybe even building that courtyard in the front so we can take advantage of the view.

We'll see.  Anyway, it was nice to wake up in a house.  Got cold pizza in the fridge (we're closer to our regular pizza place so they actually delivered last night) and our TV seems to be working.  The dog has his bed and he's getting used to walking on the laminate floors.  Still unpacking, trying to figure out where dishes and pots and pans are -- and where we can put them.

We've already repacked several boxes because we just don't have the storage space in the kitchen for it all.

And to think we really didn't restore that much.  The house is 1000 square feet so it's cozy.  Yard's easy to maintain.  Close to everything we know.

When we move things back into our house it'll feel a lot more minimalist.  I can spread things out.  Again, I left closets full of clothes behind and I threw away bag after bag.  Still, I filled every closet in this house and I have more in storage.

The only thing that still smells smoky is the Italian leather briefcase that I decided to restore at the last minute.  They said it was still smelly so they took it back to their ozone room.

The dog's asleep and snoring.  I think he'll like it here.

I think WGD will love it in your new place.  It sounds cute just reading your description.  When we moved into a small temporary house, our little dog loved it better than any other large home we ever had.  She loved having everybody all close together, I think.

It is pretty small, though, at only 1,000 sq ft.  It probably seemed large at first coming from a hotel room, until you started putting things into it that you normally would in a house to live on a permanent basis.  You’ll probably find (like I am) that while you want to continue to live with less, becoming a “true minimalist” is not exactly your cup of tea, pardon the pun.  I imagine that even BH will come to that conclusion after several months in this house.  Like you, I’m thinking a little larger home with less stuff inside is probably what we’d all prefer.  (Except when mopping or vacuuming the floors lately wth my back and shoulders aching, then I think less square feet.  Or better yet—cleaning lady!😉👍)

This new place will probably still feel like you’re living out of a suitcase, but at least it’s a place to settle into for a bit.  And just having the dog at ease and happy will go a long way to give you peace of mind.

🙂

Space is a good thing.  BH worries that I'm going to fill up the rental and then the house when we move back in but he forgets that I'm the one who lost most of what I had and sorted through it all to make those brutal decisions about parting with it.

And shopping for new things -- basic necessities -- hasn't been all that enjoyable.  Two months in a hotel probably was a valuable experience.  Now we're unpacking and making decisions about items: Good to have, but don't need it now.

The good news is that one of the restoration companies delivered a lot of boxes but they put very few items in each box.  It looks like we restored a lot more than we did.  I could tell BH was tense but now that we're unpacking, we really don't have that much (but definitely more than what fits in the rental).  No way will he be able to replace and store all his spices.  Our house did have some nice storage.

I'm having a mug of Paris -- the first one in a long time.  I work tonight and I'm going to keep the hotel tradition of walking the dog when I get home in the morning.

Re: ComPact 2019 – Jaded July

@just bee, at least you are now in a rental and can have some of your things around you. I agree, living in the hotel for 2 months, you start to develop different habits since you are living with less. I think living in this smaller rental will continue those same habits to some degree.  I cant imagine how you are going to feel when you get back into a bigger house after living smaller. It will be interesting.

Good luck with unpacking and making the rental a home.  At least you got your tea now and can enjoy a cup.

Absolutely.  I have developed different habits.  One of them is making the decision to walk the dog when I get home in the morning.  Since we've only been in this house about 48 hours, I got us hopelessly lost on this morning's outing.

Nice loooooooong walk.

Might have to print out a map before I leave the house again.

Lol, yes, it is good to know where your going. Mine love there walks too.
Sounds nice where your living and you can't fit much new in. That will be nice in a year from now.
Sounds easy to clean too.
We are debating selling and looking for a ranch.
I know it would sell, I just am not seeing what I want.

Hope all is well with you all!

Geezerette most cleaning ladies would run when they saw Carla! Lol
She would keep you safe, that is for sure.😊
My husband worked 6 years for a vet. He told me Rottweilers usually attach themselves to one person.

I don't know if he is right because I took care of my neighbors and had no problems at all.

Have a good one every body. I am just hanging hot here.

Oooooh.... a ranch.  Now that sounds like it could turn out to be a real bonanza.

😄  Yes, Carla definitely keeps me safe.  Anybody that doesn’t know her is terrified when they first meet her.  Most of the time I never try to change their minds.  She really is a big baby and whether or not she would actually jump in to physically protect me if I needed it, I’m still not sure. (I hope I never have to find out!)  My Rottweiler friends insist she would rise to the occasion.  She hates long-handled tools like brooms and will go into a frenzy attacking them—I can’t count the number of brooms she’s obliterated.  So if anyone comes at me with a broom or shovel, then I’m sure she’d jump right in!😂

Your husband is right.  Rottweilers do tend to be one-person dogs.  I am definitely that person for Carla.  I couldn’t give her away if I wanted to, and trust me, every once in a while I’d like to!😠😖😉  We once had to leave her overnight at her Auntie’s and she was a maniac all night—no sleep for their whole household!  And these are people she knows and loves!🤪

LOl, I know my oldest pup is horrible trouble if not supervised! He's and embarrassment every where we have ever gone.😁 I have to love him or I too would have to take him out! Always up to something! The other one does not step a toe over the line. If it's trouble we know it's him.

Carla would lay down her life for you. I would bet money on that. They are loyal to the end!
Thank God for dogs. Truest friends we will ever have☺
