Re: ComPact 2018 – Maintainable May

Hi ladies, longtime declutterer and reader of this thread (years). I have continued not creating another stash she I stopped the madness two years ago.

One of the ways I have done this is find a makeup brand that really works for me now that I am in my fifties. IT Cosmetic is the best brand for me. Since today is a TSV day and I wear the Bye Bye foundaiton now instead of the CC cream I have not allowed myself to even think about buying the TSV. I do not need it. But boy TSV's are hard. But kits don't work for me. I am not going to spend money when I will on use a few of the products. When I run low on the foundation I just order the foundation, but they just love to tease us!

First floods, now earthquakes and a volcano erupting.  Why is Hawaii on the hit list?

Fun fact: We have volcanoes in Albuquerque but they're well-behaved.

ABQ volcanoes

I'm still alive! It's been pretty crazy in the aloha state, but fortunately I haven't been affected by it.  I'm not on the island with Kilauea volcano.  Who would have thought when they purchased land out in the country that the volcano would wake up?  Friends from the Big Island tell me that the land is cheap in volcano country...now we know why.

I have my own urban problems.  In a month we've had to replace 2 tires on each car and my car was broken into while I was at work.  I'm steamed about that because they smashed the small quarter window at the rear of the car and only took a roll of quarters and 2 folding stools (the kind that kids use for sports when they are on the sidelines)! $250 to repair the window for $20 of stolen goods. Grr...I have to remind myself that it could have been worse.  They didn't slash my tires or steal the whole car.  Needless to say it's been an expensive month.  May has become my least favorite month so far. With the school year ending, the kids have been super busy with end of year events so I just haven't had the energy to post much.

No makeup purchases were made even thought there's a brand new Whole Foods that opened and their entire beauty section was 25% off.  I just couldn't bring myself to buy anything when I still have so much and I'm making really steady progress.  I have a facial oil that is getting older so I started using that mixed into my body lotion. I really only need one facial oil at a time.  A little goes such a long way that it takes a long time to finish one and with oils, you need to use them up before they go rancid. The only way to do that is to consistently use only one.  Just like every other product, one by one...

I finished a shampoo and conditioner that came in a Beauty Heroes box last year.  I cancelled the subscription last June and I still have 2 more products that I need to finish, a lipbalm and a general purpose balm. Why does it take so long to use up lipbalm??

I purchased a face cream from Honeyskin off of Amazon because my chin has been so dry.  Even using oils doesn't hydrate that area.  The cream worked in a couple of applications and now I don't have to use it everyday.  Especially with the weather warming up, my skin is getting oily again.

I have a crossbody leather bag that had blue dye stains on it from rubbing against my jeans. I stopped using the bag because it was looking so beat up.  But I found a video that showed how the magic eraser can remove the stain.  Sure enough, I tried it and it worked!  The bag is practically like new.  That was a great cheap life hack.

Gosh, I'm all over the place.  Just excited to "talk" with you all again.  Miss everyone!

Moderation, a balance between less and more, unmeasurable and personal in its definition, is at the heart of minimalism.

I like that.

Everything changes in your fifties, doesn't it?  I hope CC cream isn't phased out.  I prefer it to BB cream.  It's just enough, you know?

@aprilskies I was watching a video by Becky Gillaspy about reducing menopause belly fat.  I'm not quite there but I am gaining more fat in my abdomin so I need to do something NOW.  Anyway, she talked about reducing sugars & refined foods (of course) and increasing fiber & good fat.  She also mentioned fasting for 12 hours (time restricted eating, in her words).  To stop eating 3 hours before bedtime, sleep, then have breakfast 12 hours after the fast began.  It gives the body a chance to burn fat while I am sleeping due to the low blood sugar.  I thought of you.  It sounds like the intermittent fasting you mentioned.  Are you still doing this? I just started this late last week and I see a slight change.  I don't weigh myself but my fingers are less bloated in the morning and I can put my ring on easier.  Even when I have a salty meal that would normally lead to bloating, my fingers are slimmer.

@Oshare-girl - yes, that is what I am doing - IF and still doing it.  I am trying to do the 16/8 version.  Have an 8 eight hour eating window and fast for 16 hours.  However, I am doing anywhere from 14-16 hours, for the most part.  So, I stop eating from 7:30 and have lunch at 11:30 the next morning.  And I have learned to drink black coffee in the morning, although I dont think a little cream is bad.  I never thought I would be a black coffee drinker. Some days are an easy fail, it hasnt been perfect, but I can get back on track very easily now. Cutting off my eating at a certain time has really helped me with my snacking well into the night.  I lost 6 lbs but am now scared to step on the scale because i fear I gained some of that back. It doesnt take long anymore, one slip up or two. And yes, I feel less bloated which is great.  And yesterday I was at a birthday party so it kinda of went downhill.  But, I am back on track today and will try and hold true going forward. I really do like this way of eating because it really made me realize it is what and how much you eat and it is showing me how often I reach for snacks as a soother/distraction. I also had to accept the fact my metabolism isnt what it use to be. I still eat junk foods of all kinds just much less of it.

I was really successful in April so I dont want to backtrack now.

I think you will notice a difference, as you already are, if you stick with it.  As long as you dont use it as an excuse to overeat in the "window" like I did in the beginning. LOL.  I do find it difficult at times though because of the timeframe, life happens, but I adjust that as I need.  I would eventually like to do 16 hour fasts as the "norm."   It is important for me to break the cycle of mindless eating.

And I think it is smart of you to get a handle on it now.  Hormones on top of my bad habits got the best of me. I never thought I would be struggling to lose 25 lbs. I just want my clothes to fit again.

@aprilskies Wow, 16 hours seems so long!  But I bet you see better results than the 12 hour fast.  I'm still trying to stick with it. While I'm not losing anything, I am maintaining.  Last night we had dinner after my son's game, but since it was a weekend, I slept in late and was able to eat breakfast after the 12 hour mark.

This routine has really been helpful to mindless snacking at night.  I really was snacking a lot after dinner.  Now I have nothing but water after dinner.  I'm still consuming too much sugar...that is a hard one to stop.  I am buying avocado whenever I'm at Costco.  It's a great fat to consume and goes with so many dishes.

Black coffee, that would be a hard one for me.  I'd rather not drink coffee than have it black. I need to have a little milk in it.

Wishing you continued success!

Whew!

We were starting to wonder, you know?

Every time I think it's time to leave New Mexico because of the rising crime rate, I hear a story about crime in another area.  It's tiresome.

You mention oil and its limited shelf life.  I was hesitant to stock more, but someone said they'd be fine as long as they remained unopened.  What's your experience?

apples

In very small print, in the right corner of this ad, two more apples are mentioned: Number 4 SweeTango and Number 6 Opal.

I've tried every one here except SweeTango.

ETA:

I just showed this to BH and he says he's pretty sure he brought home SweeTango last year.  It's possible...

@just bee Thanks for the love!

I suspect that it was a homeless person, likely male, that did the damage.  He didn't touch my Lululemon rain jacket, umbrellas, son's basketball or sunglasses. Fortunately, I don't keep much in the car, especially since Compacting Smiley Wink so there wasn't much to steal. This happens a lot, so much so that the police were throwing out names of common offenders, trying to figure out who done it.

So oils, I suspect that's correct.  If it's unopened the shelf life is relatively long.  My problem is that all of mine are OPEN. I probably have 4 open right now, which is why I need to use some up. I need to get down to 2 oils, one that contains retinol and one that is simple like jojoba or squalane. Jojoba has a really long shelf life, actually. I've had mine open for over a year and it's still good.  It's the one with antioxidants that I worry about keeping open for long.
