So is this just the universe ComPacting?

Could be.  But if so, the universe is doing about as good a job at ComPacting as I am.  It's expanding all the time.  And our world is running out of room for all the "stuff" just like my house.

I hear ya!

I'm still doing well at telling myself that I don't need it and won't use it, so not much is coming into the house other than food and junk mail.  The microwave is officially dying and I'm trying to hold off replacing it what with Mercury gone retrograde.  Yes, that does sound ridiculous, but I don't like purchasing appliances if there's any chance they'll be lemons.  I drove AMC cars for years.  Scratch that.  They were towed.  For years.

If I can keep this thing going for another five days... well, it's not looking good.  I ate a cold pork chop for breakfast this morning.

How did we live before microwaves?  I do remember eating cold peas when I was a kid.  If I didn't eat all my dinner, I had to finish it before I got any sweets, and my mother refused to heat it up in the oven.

I often have cold coffee first thing in the morning, and we have two functioning microwaves.  But I have to pass the dog's crate to get to either of them.  And that means the dog wakes up.  And that means said dog starts whining to get out of said crate.  And that means I can't get my exercises done because said dog tries to eat my exercise machine.  And that means I get even more sore and out of shape.  And, well, you get the idea.  So I keep a cup of day-old, cold coffee in my bedroom so I can get a caffiene fix without waking said dog.

And to think, I purposely went out and got said dog.  Three months ago I could have hot coffee every morning.  At least you have a better excuse to have to eat cold food.

WHAT???  You're facing an old, cold mug of coffee first thing in the morning?  Have you taken leave of your senses?

It wasn't long ago that I was a serious coffee consumer.  Normal people wake up to clock radios.  I woke up to the sound and smell of brewing coffee.  I kept my coffeemaker close and I set it to start brewing in the morning so the smell would wake me up.  With all the coffeemakers on the market, can't you find a cute little one to set up on the nightstand or bathroom counter?  Somewhere close so the first thing you do in the morning is reach for that fresh, hot cuppa joe?

Back when I actually did stuff and we'd take an occasional road trip, I'd pack my little coffeemaker (that I bought from either HSN or QVC) so I could have coffee upon waking up.  No way was I going to wait for a cup at some local diner.  No, I wanted it before I dressed.  Before I could form a complete sentence.  It wasn't big, but it was enough to get my pulse going.

If I had to face cold coffee in the morning I wouldn't get out of bed.

Well, duh!  I never even thought of that!  Great idea!

But I'll do you one better: now that you brought it up, it just occurred to me that we have a compact (fitting description) microwave just sitting in the attic collecting dust and heaven knows what else.  I can plug that little sucker in and heat my coffee--without having to buy a new coffeemaker at all!

That will cancel out my TSV purchases from this morning!!!  (Yes, I'm into justification.Cat Tongue)

Ten days left in January: How have your plans for the new month worked out?

(Chin up.  February's a short one.)

So far this month it's been about even. I had one more thing go out than come in. But some of the things that came in were ordered in December before I recommitted, and I also got a really good deal on CeraVe. I will try to do better in February. Smiley Wink

I have been following Declutter 365 and loving it. 22 days in a row!

I finished that Korres body butter! woohoo!! I'm now concentrating on using up a L'Occitane large hand cream. I should wipe it out by end of the month! I went thru my lip products - threw out 5 different ones. For some reason, I was holding on to some that I knew I didn't like at all but kept trying to use them in vain hoping I would come to liking them...doing this all while I have a bunch of other lip balms that I KNOW I enjoy and are collecting dust. No more!! A couple were items that had received good reviews but I just didn't like the smell or they had funky taste. Tossed them! The money is already spent on them. Moving on. Going to ENJOY my other products.

I haven't made any HSN/QVC/Evine purchases yet this year! It's 2 weeks. Yippee!! I was a bit tempted by Vionic - they had some fun lace up sneakers in bright colors. Did I need them? nope. So I told myself it was a no buy for me. Then Andrew Lessman was tempting me....I turned the tv off and didn't purchase. I have enough vitamins for now. Don't need a refill unless it's his fish oil capsules.

I had the goal of limiting my makeup purchases - I was worried about the IT Cosmetics TSV but I've seen the early photos of it and I don't instantly want it!!! I'm learning what works for me and I've already tried the cc cream and my oilier skin didn't like it at all. That would be the same issue with a cream blush. Speaking of IT - I hit pan on a bronzer in one of her palettes!! I never thought I would hit pan on a bronzer but have really gotten into the habit of using it for some light sculpting. But when I run out of it, won't have to buy replacement since I have other bronzers in my stash to use next.

I actually purchased 2 things you mentioned recently, but I needed them.

1. Korres Body Butter trio - I just ran out of my beloved Nest Orange Blossom body cream.  I bought the Korres trio on sale in December (yes, just last month) and cracked one open today.  I think this is the most current body lotion rotation I have had in years.  I am finally able to use items that I purchased within 3 months time.  Wow, fresh lotion.  It was a trio though, so by the time I get to the 3rd tube, it will be into the 2nd half of 2016.

2. Vionic sandals & orthodic inserts - My feet have been killing me, even in comfy Clarks sandals.  DH suggested I try Vionic and that very day QVC was having their Vionics TSV. I didn't need new walking shoes so I ordered the inserts for the shoes I already have.  But I ordered a sandal from Amazon.  Ah, they are so good!  Arch support is amazing.  I am tossing the Clarks.  One in, one out.

And finally, IT Cosmetics. I didn't purchase anything but have been loving the CC+ cream.  It's become my tried & true base.  I told myself, no need to try anything new in the foundation category.

I really want this year to be the year that I reach my capsule makeup collection.  I really am encouraged by all of you ladies.  Reading your posts help me to stay strong.

Stay safe & warm!

Not at all!  I mean, not at all regarding your confusion.  This is still very much a beauty forum.  And this is essentially a beauty thread.  But there is nothing beautiful about waste and clutter.  About collecting items that are never used.  And there's nothing beautiful about those feelings of guilt and frustration surrounding our purchases.

I went to work the other night and experienced something that may explain some of what we do here.  I work in a small, cramped space.  I walked into my work area and immediately felt that something had changed.  The area looked and felt lighter.  My coworkers seemed more relaxed.  What happened?

The crash cart moved to an adjacent room.  Suddenly our workspace was less crowded, cramped.  Everyone agreed: It made a difference and the cart should stay in the other room.  That won't happen.  It will come back and the room will be jammed up again.  The mood will change.

We here on the ComPact thread are just working to lighten the load.

IslandGirl and justbee, I can relate to you both.

I also did succumb to Isaac’s TSV and got three colors. Yes, I realize this thread is about not buying.  But these sweaters are ‘me’.  According to most comments about them, they’re boring.  Which describes me to a ‘t’.  I should probably change my nickname to “Boring Old Geezerette”—hey, that actually has a nice ring to it!

Anyway, I wear cardigans all the time, weather permitting. I have a fetish for sweaters (along with purses and shoes).  I have plenty of cardigans already, but most of the ones I have that look about this weight don’t have buttons—a foolish fad, if you ask me.  And I do use the buttons.  So, if these TSVs are okay in the fit and quality, I can ‘retire’ the sweaters I’m wearing now.  And, although still wearable, mine are getting a little long in the tooth, so I can justify the purchase.

I don’t have a problem purchasing things. I just want to make sure that anything I purchase from now on, I actually use.  I, too, have had many things I bought that I never used and oftentimes ditched without ever using them.

The ComPact isn't about not buying, really, because everyone here wants a thriving economy.  We just want our money to purchase items that will make sense and make our lives better.  If a sweater brings you joy and you wear it, then there's no issue.  If you buy it, feel bad about it and never wear it, that's a problem.

You've said it yourself: You've purchased items that aren't used.  Remember that fad item -- something sparkly on a piece of what looked like fishing line?  Everyone was wearing a necklace that was chainless.  A pendant or cubic zirconia with no visible means of support.  I didn't particularly like the look but QVC was selling a CZ on a string one night and I just ordered it.  Has it ever been out of the box?  Has it ever been worn?  The fad fizzled and I'm stuck with this thing.  With shipping, it was probably close to fifty bucks.  It is a useless item.

If you can find the basics and stick with them, that's half the battle.  Find what works and forget about it.  A comfortable pair of shoes, a dependable foundation.  That's how you'll start shrinking the collection.

That reminds me!  I just read an article about a capsule wardrobe.  I'll have to dig that up and post it.

I didn't cancel the TSV (Isaacs cardigan).  I wear cardigans at least 80% of the time.  The last time I bought a cardigan was about 2 years ago.  I'm glad he didn't have yellow, turquoise or lavender or else I would be in trouble. Bought the pink one.

I went in my closet & got rid of a few dresses I've had for years & never, ever wore!  I gave them to my neighbor.  I saw dollars with wings fying out when I did that but oh well, the money was gone anyway.

I need to go through my bag collection & get rid of some.  I use only Vera Bradley now because they're cute & light. The leather bags I have are killing my back & shoulders.  I don't even know what I have.  Sad.

On the bright side, I haven't bought any jewelery for at least 3 years now.  I will try to give some away eventually.

I'll also look into the365 declutter blog.
