Yes, I'm sure it is. And, of course, when they are in the hospital with you, they are not out in the world hurting others. I don't know whether or not you feel you are helping those people to better handle their issues, but if you're feeling like what you're doing isn't making any difference, it is indeed time to look for something else.

I just feel that I'm working in a system that isn't working.

I can understand that.

I go through the county to get anti-depressants. The place I go to is a good example of what you are talking about...it's rather frustrating.

Hi ladies! I haven't posted lately but I've been reading. I'm sorry to hear about the job stresses and life stresses that some of you are going thru. I know how difficult that can be, to feel stuck in a situation that you can't control. I hope that things are working out for you. And I hope that those of you that have been ill are feeling better too!

justbee-I know what it's like to be stuck in a job that you don't like. I've been an RN for 20 years in a hospital setting, mostly cardiac step down. Things are so different than they used to be. I still feel like our patients get good care for the most part, but there have been a lot of changes and not all for the good. I've started looking around for something else too, I'm just beginning to try my hand at home health care but I'm still keeping my eyes out for something else too. I just can't spend another 20 years at that hospital, at least not working the floors the way I have been.

Re: ComPact 2014 – February

My ORC is about as done as it's going to get. I've gone thru most of my closet, all my spring and summer items. I will let go of some sweaters in the future but I'll wait until fall to see if I can sell them on consignment before I donate them. Hubby wasn't interested in going thru any of his stuff, so I didn't get anywhere there. I found a few things to toss and a few to donate overall, so I'm happy with what got done. Now I have to find another focus for next month, I'm thinking my kitchen and/or loft/office space.

Beauty wise, I'm doing pretty good over here. I haven't bought any new items other than the Ponds cold cream cleanser. I have to check to see how many items left this month, not too many, but any little bit helps. I'm really beginning to lose the urge to buy. I still will feel a slight temptation here and there, when I see something new and pretty, or I watch something on TV like all the Skinn that was just on. But the urge passes pretty quickly. So I'm happy about that.

And it doesn't help that I'm exposed to the worst of humanity. I'm starting to think that I should be looking at this another way. I could start using my patients as material for horror novels. But I don't want to be responsible for keeping people awake at night.

I worked with a great nurse on the infant unit and she was offered a position at another hospital, working with cardiac patients. A huge increase in pay -- she grabbed it. A few months later she was ready to walk away from nursing. That job was killing her. She's done with bedside nursing and is now a case manager.

Re: ComPact 2014 – February

I wasn't working as a staff nurse, but was in the newborn nursery teaching nursing students when the computers took over. The computers became more important than the patient. A doctor had a baby in front of him while doing a physical, looked at the computer and saw the temperature was recorded as 89 instead of 98. He freaked because he had not been notified of this low temp. If he had looked at the patient, he would have seen the baby was quite normal.. Getting the computer work done became more important than patient care. I'm totally out of it now and just teach classes part-time. There are days that I mourn the fact that I'm no longer using the training I received long ago, but I must leave bedside nursing to the next generation.

What I discovered, working as a tech on the infant unit, is that the techs were spending more time with the patients and the nurses were spending more time with the computer charting. In fact, I think that was true when I was doing clinicals, too. The nurses -- no matter which unit -- were on the computers and the techs were with the patients.

And the errors in patient charts give me the heebie-jeebies.
