Coloring highlighted hair?

Has anyone done this? What did you use and how were the results? My hair is naturally dark blonde with lots of highlights and some gray at the roots. My roots are dark blonde at the crown and back? I am trying to avoid a costlly trip to the salon or an expensive repair. Any experiences? Thanks.
