Read an interesting report from some dermatologists this week explaining that applying collagen creams does not increase collagen in your skin. The collagen molecule is too large to penetrate your pores. It is simply another moisturizer yet people pay great amounts for this ingredient thinking it will help. What does help build collagen is exfoliating, using AHAs, and vitamin C. Just something to think about when you are buying your creams and serums.

I use very inexpensive moisturizers...currently St. Ives collagen/elastin. It's about $6 for a 10 oz. tub and lasts forever. Don't know if the collagen makes any difference or not...and I don't buy it for the collagen...I just like the way my skin responds to it and it stays nice & moisturized all day! Add a couple drops of argon oil to it and that's all I do.

So true! Retinoids (retinol, tretinoin, retin-a, renova, etc.) also help build collagen.

Exactly, virgosun! Also, maintaining good health so your body can restore/replace your collagen. We need collagen for our joints, too, not just for beautiful skin.
According to Livestrong, vitamin C is "absolutely necessary for collagen formation..." Also green tea catechins. And amino acids: lycine & proline.

You are right, I forgot to include retin A or retinols that were also mentioned as collagen builders. And I agree we definitely need to be in good health to promote collagen in our bodies.

Yes! Yes! Yes! Thanks for sharing, virgosun.

Harpa and JLF Thanks for the replies. I always appreciate the very helpful info you both share about ingredients in cosmetics.

Yep, this has been fact for many years now.
And not just in skincare (creams and serums) but in cosmetics! For example, IT cosmetics always touts the fact that her products contain hydrolyzed collagen (from animals, by the way) but they do NOTHING for your skin so it is worthless.

I take 6 Youtheory collagen pills daily, 3 in the a.m. & 3 in the p.m., right before I go to bed. I also take a product that contains Vitamin C at the same time. I was taking 3 daily but I bumped it up to 6 a couple of days ago & a patch of eczema that I have on my right arm & right lower calf are starting to clear up already.

gentle vibration or tapping such as the Derma Wand also helps the body to make Collagen.
