Harpa probably knows more about this, but I just learned about the products you should never use together...never knew for example about negative effects of using glycolic with a retinol, among other combinations with adverse effects.
KateChopin, can you explain? Are there negative effects from using BHAs with Retinol? I'm thinking of adding retinol to my routine which currently includes BHAs 2x a day.

Kate, where did you hear this? Retinol can be used with BHA and AHA, as long as your skin can handle both ingredients together. http://www.paulaschoice.com/expert-advice/beauty-buzz/_/six-retinol-myths-busted

Irish, you can use retinol with BHA. You might want to introduce the retinol slowly, though, to give your skin time to adjust. Excellent info about retinol and bha/aha here: http://www.paulaschoice.com/expert-advice/beauty-buzz/_/six-retinol-myths-busted

I haven't tried the A, but not the glycolic. I couldn't use the A…. it was too harsh for me. I love their C-Clean. It does a good job of removing makeup and cleansing, without being at all drying.

Retinol 5 or Retin A

It's my understanding that glycolic acid works more superficially by sloughing off the top layers of dead skin cells, allowing the newer skin cells to be at the surface for a younger look and that retinols work in the deeper layers of skin, proliferating new skin cells to the degree that they push the older skin cells to the surface of the skin much more quickly, thereby replacing the old skin cells.
I opted for the latter and have been using tretinoin for many years. After the initial couple of years on it, my derm suggested adding glycolic acid for an added boost in results, however, my skin couldn't tolerate it. The regimen was to use the glycolic acid in the morning and the tretinoin at night. I'm now at a higher strength of tretinoin and pleased with that.
