Castor oil/baking soda for brown spots

Watching Instagram and saw a hack for brown spots that includes equal parts castor oil and baking soda.  She didn't say how long it took for the spots to disappear or lighten. Has anyone heard of this? I

I have both brown spots and also purple spots. So I'm always interested to try anything that could possibly work!

The purple ones are from LP (Lichen planus) stemming from a defect in my immune system that involves the hair follicles somehow. The issue arises from the deepest layer of the skin. 😮😱

So, whatever I try to lighten them doesn't speed up the process as fast as I'd like.

I use the strongest preparation of retinA that I can buy. I keep sunscreen on them because when I do finally get them lightened (both brown and purple) if the sun even hits them, they are back!

I have no answers

but one thing I learned on a forum for LP is that my very strong steroid ointment lightens and thins the skin.

By using a dab of this on dark spots, the skin is thinned which then helps the retinA work better.

Use of the steroid ointment is NOT medically recommended...in fact it is discouraged.

Sp far, easiest and most reliable for me is constant application of sunscreen, but I'm open for other ways!

Baking soda is highly alkaline and will strip off the skin barrier in no time. The skin will become extremely dry and flaky after that.

Re: Castor oil/baking soda for brown spots

Morning ladies... it's good and hot here in SE MD and I am already basking in it on the porch ☀️

@monicakm  Be careful yes, with a DIY...  I'm not sure why or what I was looking for many years ago, but a read suggested smearing castor oil on the face, then using a warm cloth like a facial wrap and then rinse off.  Can I tell you it left my face full of blackheads in about two weeks.  I had a mess and the only thing that got rid of them was using a clarisonic, which I still use to this day.

Retin A has kept me free of any dots, wrinkles, pimples and spots on my face and also on my hands.  I have used it every night on my hands, just like my face for 11 years.

Castor oil would increade the oil level of my skin too much.

@bmorechick

I have used retinA since I was 30.
So 40 years!

And I haven't even thought about putting it on my hands!

What a great idea!

My face has very few brown spots...a few come out because I have been lax with sunscreen, esp. on my drivers side.

Thanks for the idea!

[ Edited ]

I bought the TSV pads from Dr. Nassif a few weeks ago based on all the love shown here. After I finish my face, neck, and decollete, I use them on my hands and forearms.

The difference on my brown spots is nothing short of impressive. I have tried everything I put retinol on my hands and forearms every night, I have used Ambi cream. I have tried vitamin C, and nothing has diminished them like these pads. I talked to my dermatologist the last  time I was in and she said I would need laser.

I cannot get over how much they have diminished. I keep looking at my hands and forearms in shock.

Re: Castor oil/baking soda for brown spots

@MG Chris.  Dr. Nassifs pads haven't done a thing for my brown spots and I've been using them for a couple of years.  Actually, they've gotten worse.

Since neither castor oil or baking powder is a bleaching agent, how could they cause spots to fade?
