Body pillows - how to use?

I'm talking about the ones that are about 20" X 60". I sleep on my side and I'm trying to take some pressure off my hip. Are these body pillows for sleeping on, or for cuddling up against? I've never had one so I don't know if this is what I'm looking for. I will be renovating soon to a different bed size so don't want to buy another mattress or foam topper right now.
