Blob of Wen v Counting Pumps?

Is counting the pumps really that important? It sort of drives me crazy. I'd rather just squirt a blob into my hands and use it to cleanse my very thick, longish hair. Is there another type of guideline, such as 1/2 cup, etc? Thank you!
