Blending Gray Hair

I have short, very thick hair and it seems like all of a sudden it has LOTS of gray and my hair is not soft and shiny like it used to be. I use the same shampoo and conditioner that I have for years. If it is the gray causing this would it help to color my hair? It is about 3/4 light brown and the rest scattered gray. I was looking at the store today and online at some highlighting kits but I'm not sure. I don't want to go anywhere because I never like what anyone does to my hair. Anyone have any suggestions? Thank you.
