Have you thiught about making adjustments in your skincare first?  I used to have oily skin (T-zone) even into my fifties.  When I changed my skincare and began using a cleansing oil that I felt was a dupe for Tatcha, my oil production normalized and the pores purged the gunk that was trapped in and enlarged them. I don't even have to use a mattifying primer - regular is fine but I don't like the overly siliconey kind.

@JeanLouiseFinch   I'm always amazed that skin knows what it needs. If you add too many mattifying products and try to adjust your skin's natural oils, it seems to say, "hmmmm, I'm dry and need more oil" and begins pumping out more.

@Jordan2  - Why don't you try Mac's Studio Fix powder foundation.  It's in my arsenal and a few other posters have mentioned it.  It comes in a liquid also, but I'm suggesting the powder form.

It has good coverage and does not settle into fine lines.  There are tons of shades so you should be able to find one that works for you.

Good luck.

Re: Best Foundations and Setting Powders

I am confused about which foundation shade to order.  I have a fair and ruddy complexion.  Do I want some some yellow to balance the red or would I be better off with pink to better match my skin tone? The Max powder foundation is on sale on the Mac website and I would like to try it.

Re: Best Foundations and Setting Powders

@Jordan2  I have oily combo skin and heard the same thing from a dermatologist in my 20's (I recently turned 35.)  I still remember asking the dermatologist if I'll ever have perfectly matte or dry skin and she laughed and said, "Oh no,  not you- you''ll have oily skin for the rest of your life!" Smiley Very Happy.  Here's the thing- sure, I have oily/combo skin, but I'm a beautiful girl and I create great makeup looks on my face- do I have to re-powder mid-day and touch up my makeup- absolutely, but I'm ok with that. Also, sometimes I look at paparazi photos of actresses and models, and without a makeup artist on hand and left to their own devices, they too have oily skin a lot of the time or makeup that seperates.

        When I paint a painting on a canvas, it remains the same in color depth and the image is unchanged for its lifetime and mine- but makeup is applied to a living person who can sweat or feel cold, exercise inensely, cry, smile or laugh or produce oil- the art (makeup) applied to the canvas (our face)) will never remain the way it was when initially applied as the face moves and the skin goes through so many things throughout the day.  Its natural for makeup to change throughout the day- that's the way I see it, its part of nature.  There are some plus sides to having oily/combo skin: oily skin generally leads to less wrinkles later in life and on the plus sdie, we don't have to buy expensive glowy foundations and glowy face primers to achieve a glowy look! Smiley Happy

Re: Best Foundations and Setting Powders

Struggled with this all my life, in my 50's and still do.  I have tried so many things and finally landed on what works best for me.  I use bare minerals bisque as foundation (not the actual foundation,  tried that bisque covers better and makes me less oily. ) I usually use honey but when I  am not as tan I mix summer and honey to get correct shade.   The It bye bye pores powder on top. Works best for me for controlling oil. The loose powder work best for me but the pressed is still pretty good.   Last year I tried Isomers high definition primer and when I use that along with the bisque and it setting powder I get the best results I have ever experienced in all my years of trying so many different things.

Ps...I have tried the oil as well and while this may work to balance some,  it did not do that for me.   I tried several brands and all just made me more oily.  On the plus side, I have very few wrinkles, about the only benefit of the oily skin.   Good luck finding what works for you.

@Mom2Dogs

It's drying for me as well but when I had an oily complexion like OP, it was a great foundation.  No way could I wear it now.

Re: Best Foundations and Setting Powders

I have a coworker who is very much into high end makeup (she does TikTok videos). She is obsessed with everything makeup and recommended Haus Labs foundation to me. I wonder how well the foundation would get along with my oily skin?
