Best Eyeshadow for Sensitive Eyes

Hello friends,

I contracted an eye infection 4 months ago- it is now healed and the doctor has given me a clean bill of "eye health".

Since then, my eyes have become sensitive to the eyeshadow(s) I've used for years, (Laura Geller, Smashbox and MAC). I spoke with the nurse practitioner at my ophthalmologist's office; she said it was not uncommon to develop a sensitivity to certain products after such an infection and suggested I use an eyeshadow made specifically for sensitive eyes.  I should have asked her for some recommendations, but didn't, so I'm asking all of you...  I appreciate any and all suggestions.  Many thanks!

Re: Best Eyeshadow for Sensitive Eyes

Similar thing happened to me this year but. I researched online and came up with a little known but common allergy to carmine, aka ground up insects used for red coloring in makeup, health and beauty aids and certain foods. In fact, your infection could have been caused by a slow developing allergy!

You may want to google this and see if your experience matches the symptoms.Almost all eyeshadows, liners, blushes and lipsticks contain carmine. Carmine is also called by about 6 other names and even Almay and Neutrogena contains this.  It's late and I am very sleepy but I will post again tomorrow with what I have learned in the recent past.

Clinique is what I recommend. Not too pricey and you can return should you have any issues.

Last year also experienced eye infection (blepharitis) resulting from makeup.

Recommend with pleasure bareminerals items listed below. Minimalist easy solutions are a must-including makeup. Since switching to bareminerals no longer experiencing (blepharitis) bonus points for quick easy looks.

Sixty years old love the Smokey eye quad! Easy and versatile looks.

Flawless Definition mascara [ebony] so beautiful one coat.

Re: Best Eyeshadow for Sensitive Eyes

My eyes have become more sensitive now, too, for no apparant reason.  So, now I am very careful with eye products.  You might be able to still wear your favorite eyeshadows.  But make sure that they are new (make sure that they are not expired or too old that might have bacterial growth).  And also make sure that the makeup brushes are cleansed regularly.  I have stopped using mascara and stopped lining my inner eyes because of my eye sensitivity and that seems to help a lot. Also, the glittery or shimmery eyeshadows seems to irritate my eyes more.  I hope that helps.

@Sweet_Serenity @Quinny

I, too, had an infection underneath my eyes.  Saw my PCP and was prescribed a non-steroid ointment.  It has cleared up for the most part, but has left this area quite sensitive and extremely dry.  Have an appt with a derm in two weeks for an eye cream that will not irritate my eyes.

As far as the BM eyeshadow quad A291496, the Carmine shade has bismuth which I'm highly allergic to.  You may or may not be, just wanted to  point this out before you make the purchase.

@Quinny Clinique is as good a place as any to start with the mainstream easy to obtain brands.  As mentioned it isn't expensive (compared to other prestige brands), and the products are developed with thought given to sensitivities.  That said, the process of finding new eye shadows may require some patience on your part as hits and misses could come from unexpected places.

@Quinny  The most important thing to do after the healing of eye infections, is tossing mascara, all eye makeup used before (pencils can be sharpened), lash curlers cleaned w/ alcohol.

The mascara is recommend for sensitive eyes is a tubular mascara...many mu lines have them. The product slides off lashes w/ just warm water during cleansing omitting the need for eye makeup remover. For shadow, I’d try Jane Iredale or other reputable mineral makeup. A hypoallergenic lid primer could form a protectant shield between lid and shadow.

Re: Best Eyeshadow for Sensitive Eyes

Almay makes some really pretty shadows. Long-lasting and good pigment. They have palettes, trios and quads in a variety of colors...very reasonably priced, too.

These are on sale at Ulta - $9 :
