Beauty Blender: What am I doing wrong?

I bought 2 beauty blenders during the Sephora sale and I've been trying to make them work since they arrived. I read that you're supposed to pat or stiple with them not rub/brush your foundation with them. So I have been trying to follow the directions but I'm not seeing anything amazing going on. Any foundation that they touch seems to get s*u*cked up in the sponge and there's none left for my face. Same with concealer...

My ADesign foundation brushes actually do a nicer job. What am I missing here?
