As You Know, I Don't Wear Sunscreen

No bashing please.  I'm not in the sun enough to be harmed by it.  I've shunned the sun and heat all my life.  So now that that's out of the way,

I wear capris and sandals most of the year (Texas).  I'm sitting in the shade with my legs (knees down) exposed to the sun to try and get a little color. About 10 mins a day. Not looking for a savage tan, just enough to give my milky white legs a bit of color (I don't want to do self tan).  If I use a sun screen, I won't tan.  Right?  And again, I'm not wanting to look like JLo.

Thanks

@monicakm - at only 10 minutes a day, I'm not sure I'd even bother with sunscreen.

Re: As You Know, I Don't Wear Sunscreen

@JudyL  Would be correct...most physicians say 20 minutes a few times a week no sunscreen for vitamin D absorption.

Now I love the intense humidity, heat, sun, and beach but must be careful because in summer, we hit the beach at 10 and stay until about 3.  Yes, I'm greased up but do tan a bit even with sunscreen.  Face always under umbrella.  So If it were me, no sunscreen for just a few minutes.  You may get a bit of color but not much.

If I could only look like JLo...😁

And I am the exact opposite--a sun godess who loves to soak up the rays. I tan so darkly I almost change skin color. I love to sit on the beach, work in my garden, and tramp around tourist sites all in the sun and heat.

I rarely wore sunscreen either, but one time I was in a very, very hot place (Central American beach at 105 degrees pure sun), and I did burn a bit, so from now on I wear some sunscreen until I get a good base all over.

There are some exceptionally sensitive parts of the body that should probably always have sunscreen--nose, eyelids, back of ears, neck, chest, etc., as they can get burned without realizing. It is also good to apply body cream after sun exposure to keep the skin soft and nurtured.

My husband does many sports, and I bought him a tube of sports sunscreen (almost like chapstick) that he can apply easily on nose, face, etc.  Yes, you can get burned on your face when skiing in Winter because the mountains are high and closer to the sun, and also when in the water in the Summer because the sun's rays bounce off the waves.

I love the sun, and I do respect its power and appreciate its benefits.

BTW, I personally think J-Lo looks great--milky-white skin is just too stark for my taste.

It's not only direct sunlight which is damaging. It's also the reflected UV light which comes from objects around you, for example water, sand, sidewalks and even buildings that you sit in front of. Sitting in the shade helps but UV light comes at you from all directions and not just from the sun above.

I never heard of putting sunscreen on eyelids. One would have to know what kind to use otherwise it could be irritaitng even if not directly in the eye.

Why is that even necessary if one is wearing sunglasses which offer UV protection? I don't see the point no matter how much articles promote this.

NO, if you use a sun BLOCK you won't tan or burn.

If you use sun SCREEN it will protect you from BURNING, not prevent tanning.  That's why so many makeup foundations have sun SCREEN in it.

@bmorechick

I'd sit out there a little longer but I don't like heat and bugs.  I found a black mamba on the patio the other day.  OK, it might have been a chicken snake but a snake is a snake to me.  I don't like the outdoors.  Mosquitos love my type O blood I don't like the outdoors.  I like snow!  I wish I did like the beach scene but I'm just not cut out for it.

Re: As You Know, I Don't Wear Sunscreen

I find sitting in the front seat of a car the worst. The sun comes in strongly through the window. I do wear sunscreen most of the time. I hate those sunspots that pop up on the face. I also hate what the sun does to my hair color.
