Once a woman reaches a certain age it just looks like she is desperately holding on to her youth. And I highly doubt that thought hasn't crossed the mind of many people who see very long hair on a woman past 50...may not tell her to her face though. They will clamor how it's fine to do what you want but with it comes a price.

@Trinity11

While I agree with many of your posts, this time I think your comments are just too much of a generalization.    A LOT of 50 year old women don't look anywhere near 50, so are we talking about her actual age, or when she starts to look "50"?

I think this falls into the category of many other fashion decisions: .... Can the woman pull it off?   Is it flattering to her face?  Is the hair in good condition?

Not all young women with long hair look stylish, either.   Some keep their hair long for financial reasons ... they can't afford the upkeep of haircuts, etc.   It's just cheaper to wash it and do pretty much nothing else.

IMO, the most important consideration is does it flatter?, regardless of actual length.

Good answer. Yes, you are right. Does it flatter is a much more important consideration. I just don't think I have ever seen a woman that is older look good with extremely long hair. It really is a subjective topic and no right or wrong reply. I acknowledge that.Woman Happy

I'm well over 50 and feel I look better with chin length hair.  It also forces me to style my hair daily. It's too easy to become lazy when my hair is long. I am at the salon every 3 weeks to maintain my style.  At my age, I have the time so why not? My hair is in better condition than it was 20 or 30 years ago.  I no longer perm or bleach it. (or bake in the sun with lemon juice in my hair)

A lot of young ladies should not wear longer hair as it is often thin, damaged or scraggly looking.

I'm probably in the minority but I think the majority of the pictures of the older ladies with long hair are anything but flattering. (sorry, but the word witch comes to mind)  I do think most of them look sophisticated and classy with their hair up.

The other side of the coin is the woman wearing matronly clothing and a short, no-style hairdo.  From the back she looks 60+. When she turns around you see she is 30.

The moral of the story is that women should wear clothing and hair styles that flatter them. Not what society deems "proper" for some pulled out of the air age group, but flattering to her own unique body and face.

It's also helpful to reassess your hair and clothing choices every now and then.  What was flattering on you 5 years ago may need tweaking 5 years later.

Hair coloring can only go so far. Look at Diane Gilman's hair...to me it looks fried.

Re: Article: Long Hair Over 50

I did the opposite I let my hair grow longer way after 50.  As a child I always had long hair.  Cut it all off in HS and most of my adult life the longest I let it grow was barely touching my shoulders.  Now it's in the middle of my back and I love it and always get compliments.  When I feel it hits that "too long" stage I cut a few inches off.  My hair is healthy, shiny, no split ends.  It's easy for me as I air dry and it's perfect.  I do see women that shouldn't be wearing it long because it's unhealthy and looks it.  I'll rock it for as long as I feel it looks good. All friends (stylist included) tell me NOT to cut it.

Re: Article: Long Hair Over 50

It's a personal choice, if you want long hair, wear it long.  I cut my hair in my early 20's and have worn it short to collar bone length over the years, I'm 61.  I get my hair cut & colored every 6 weeks and like it a lot.  I do get many compliments on my hair.  Whether you wear your hair long or short it needs to be properly maintained.  I have friends who keep their hair long and only get it trimmed every 6 months.  Right after it's trimmed it looks great but after a month or so it doesn't look so good, at least to me.  Even long hair needs regular maintenance.

Re: Article: Long Hair Over 50

[ Edited ]

For many women who are post menopausal their hair quality and or volume are not the same as pre menopause. For many other women persistant hot flashes make long hair just too much weight and heat when you already feel like your head is about to ignite from the heat of the flashes. For some reason there are women who - because they are not personally having these issues- can't understand or have any empathy for those many, many women who do.

Personally I have seen many senior women in Florida who insist on keeping their hair long despite that it does not have the quality or volume it once did - and it looks terrible. Long , stringy, dull lifeless hair is not at all attractive. Sometimes women need to be honest with themselves or have a good friend who is.

I know a lady who had kept her hair long and she wore it up in a bun or something every day and it looked nice. She was in a auto accident and both her shoulders were broken. She is no longer able to get her arms up to care for her hair so she had to cut it short. Now her DH washes it for her and combs it, then she just lets it dry. OMG - her hair was naturally curly and it is so cute short. She likes it now that she has gotten used to it, and says she had forgotten how curly it was.She also says she is sorry she wasted so much time every day brushing it and fussing over it, and what a torture it had been to wash and dry it when it was long.

I've had short hair since I had chemo at age 34 because my hair never came back nice.It was always fine but it's worse and is also poker straight now, won't even hold a slight curve so I NEED to keep it short to be manageable.

Re: Article: Long Hair Over 50

As you can see already, I have nothing against long hair on older women. Actually I like it even better than short cuts, if hair is nice.

It is definitely easier to maintain one's hair healthy looking when it's short vs. when it is longer, and obviously this would require more work and care to stay healthy and good looking all the way to the ends!

So, in a way, I am actually admiring women with longer hair more, than the once with a short cute haircuts. Because I know, what goes into it. I also seeing as them keep their youth and femininity closer to them, as they maintain their long hair.

Also, want to say, I've been noticing if woman's face and skin are well kept and at it's best, her natural gray hair makes the face looking suprisingly and strikingly YOUNGER.

When processed, colored, bleached, highlighted hair could sometimes show the face looking older, as processed/colored hair can't hide it's age any longer, then her face also may look older next to this "trying to be younger" colored/processed hair.

Just my observation, nothing more... Many may disagree with me. I just happened to see and observe large crowds of people passing by me, and this is what I see and notice.... those strange things. Cat Happy

In my eyes, gray hair has this quite unexpected striking effect framing a face with nice skin on!
