I cut about 8 inches off my hair not long ago after 4 decades of wearing it long, longer and really long. Not because I felt pressured by society to cut my hair now that I'm over 50, but because it was dragging my face down and not a good look. But this article does pose a good question.
So, here's the question--did you cut off your long locks after a certain age?

Here is a list of everything Women should stop wearing after 50:
1. The weight of society's expectations.
End of list.

I love long hair but it never looked good on me, even when I was much younger. My hair and face look better with a short hairstyle. My hair is fine and straight and looks bad if I wear it long.

Nope................however, I am short, and I have worn my hair in an up-do my entire life..........(along with heels).

@gardensia I love this! I wore my hair very long (waist-length), until I was around 30 (I'm 61). It's been everywhere from pixie cut to shoulder-length at varying times since. I cut it simply because I was tired of dealing with it, and I now keep it chin-length because that's the easiest for me to maintain. I've seen many women over 50 with beautiful long hair! Like coloring your hair, it's a personal choice. We all should do what makes us feel most beautiful at any age!

Actually I gave up on long hair when I had my children. Something had to go and it was the hair. About four years ago, I decided to let it grow again. It was down to my shoulders. A few months ago, I told my stylist to cut it short and she said "oh thank God. Some women can wear long hair and some can't and I am in the can't category." It was definitely dragging my already sagging face down further. My hair is baby fine and has wonky growth patterns as a result of dozens of cowlicks. Anybody who has cowlicks in their hair knows what I am talking about. Nothing can be done about them. I'm in my late sixties and short just works best for my facial structure and hair type.

I think you already know if you are a long hair person or a short hair style type of person. I asked my husband should I cut my hair? He said why? It looks good, you don't look your age and you are a long hair type of person.
I just turned 58 y.o. my hair is midway down my back, thick and just beginning to get some grey on the sides - probably 90 to 95% of my hair is light to medium brown. Where it turned a bit grey was where it used to lighten in the summer to dark blonde highlights. I am debating whether to color my hair or not...Never have done that..
My husband was right I am basically a long hair type of person. My Mom cut my hair in the third grade it was down to my waist. I cut my hair in high school and when I was pregnant 34 years ago. Each time I cut my hair it looked nice, but I wasn't cooler, my hair needed to be reshaped every 4 to 6 weeks. I basically don't like to keep going to the salon that often. When its hot I can french braid my hair, do a pony tail or an updo. I am not locked into having to run to the salon every 4 to 6 weeks at anywhere from $45 and up.
I must confess I like to look nice by I am not a high maintenance type of gal never have been ![]()

ABSOLUTELY NOT AGE RELATED.
HOWEVER, anyone, at ANY AGE should have a BFF who will tell them when they look snazzy and/or when they look awful, and said BFF should be held totally free of negative reactions to the opinion expressed.

I am 60 today.....I am kind of at the crossroads here... I had long hair for many years that I colored for years to hide my silver white hair... three years ago I said NO MORE COLOR! NO MORE MESS, TIME AND EXPENSE. So I cut my hair super short... and grew out the color. So it it now silver white.
I had my hair short for about a year.. and it was fun.. but, missed playing with my hair. Putting it up on my head and using clips and such. So now I have let it growout to about my shoulders... it is all white. I want it about 6 inches longer( another year to grow) so I can put it up in a messy bun. Right now I can JUST put it up in a pony tail.
I do not plan to grow it super long again... but, we will see... I tend to go from one extreme to another with my hair!

For once a sane article on hair.
This part particularly struck me, especially as it relates to so many QVC forum posts over the years
I find it perplexing and almost funny that five inches longer than the prescribed “modesty law” for hair gets many people as angry as if these women have betrayed society and revealed themselves to be practically hair sociopaths that need to go to re-training camp. The whole thing is a sad ritual that reeks of censorship and penitence. The sacrificial lamb. The robbed hair. Whenever women are too wild, too independent, too intelligent — the reaction has always been: off with the hair, literally cutting them down to size.
