I am kind of a little bit afraid of my Retin-A though. I'm expecting to wake up one of these mornings looking like a lizard.

Why would you be? You can just wash it off.

I've never been afraid of makeup. At 62, I still love playing with it! I love colored eyeliners (nothing crazy...just plum, dark greens and, sometimes, dark blues), often wear eyeshadow with just a bit of shimmer, won't leave the house without at least foundation, blush, lip color & mascara.
As a child, I watched my mother put her makeup on every day, and couldn't wait til I was old enough to use it!

I remember when I first wanted to use it as a young teen way back in the early 60's and my mother wasn't happy. She wore it , but back then the moms would freak and tell us we would look like "street-walkers" (nicer word for prostitute). All these years later I believe my skin is better for having worn it. I think perhaps it provided some sun protection even before it contained sunscreen. Most of my friends who never wore makeup look more wrinkled than my friends who did. Just my opinion.
@Kardi . I agree with you on all points! Yes come to think of it those who never wear makeup seem to have more wrinkles.
I'm also around your age and wanted so badly to wear makeup in jr high but I had to wait until high school.

@Kardi I too started wearing makeup at around the age of 14. I had not thought about it, but way back then I wore Bonnie Bell, and that did have some sun protection. I am rapidly approaching the big 6 0 and I have few wrinkles, so I guess the sun protection that makeup provided did help. Eventually I switched to Clinique when I could afford it and I think that also had some sun protection. I never was much of a sun lover, and now due to Lupus I must avoid sun, or wear a very high SPF.

No, I'm not afraid of makeup. I don't recall ever hearing that comment from anyone.
I enjoy trying new products despite knowing they may not work for me. Sometimes I discover great new products! - I'm trying a couple new ones today!

@tansy Hi Tansy! I agree with you... I am not scared of makeup, but, less is better for me now. I like a very natural look with a bit of blush and lip. I rarely wear founation, if I do it is very light. Nothing loud or over the top. For my eyes I only wear mascara and a pale concealor on top of the eye lids. No eye shadow or liners anymore.

I don't think the "afraid" was in a literal sense. I think they are just using a figure of speech...in other words, try something new and get out of your rut.
My answer, of course, would be no. I am not afraid to try something new, but after all the new things I've already tried, I know what looks best and I definitely have preferences.

Scared is a pretty strong word for something you can wipe off w/ Kleenex or wash off w/ cleanser. I'm not intimidated to try new products and used to do that all the time.
Now that I've found the skincare products and makeup that works best for me, I don't feel the necessity to fix what isn't broken.

@blankette wrote:I hear it implied when venders are presenting their MU products. This is a frequent claim made (by many) that implies the buyer is afraid and needs reassurance to try a high lighter, a bold lip, contouring etc. it goes on and on. It is as if they feel the need to reassure you it will be OK. I find it very condescending myself. it is a sales ploy I believe.
THey will emphatically tell you "dont be afraid to try a new this or that, don't be afraid to wear a red lip, dont be afraid all the time!!!
Well, if a woman is already wearing makeup, I doubt she's "scared" of it.
Seems to me that the vendor is addressing a viewer's hesitancy to try a different color .... not saying "don't be scared of makeup".
