   Consider this a very informal survey.

Where I grew up, comparing someone's hair to "doll's hair" was a real insult. 

Here's what comes to my mind:

  It's like saying someone's hair looks totally fake...the kind of fake you can spot from across the room in dim lighting.

  It's like saying someone's hair is permanently fuzzy, frizzy, out of control looking.

  It's like comparing someone's hair to a cheap wig with overly-shiny plastic stands in perfectly spaced rows.

Is saying someone's hair looks like "doll's hair" considered a compliment in many areas of the country? I've never heard it used positively, except from one person.

When she says it, it's complimentary.

would not be able to say it was an insult or a compliment.

i have seen dolls hair that is beautifully soft and silky.

i have seen dolls hair that looks like it has been through a garbage disposal.

wow! I know it's early in the thread, but I've got to say I'm genuinely surprised already. This was a comparative term known to everyone in my area.  . . .Huh!

@x Hedge  I have never heard anyone use that comparison doll's hair v. human hair.  Very strange.

I grew up in NYC  (in the dark ages) ... never heard the expression.
