Amazonian Clay foundation expiration date?

Unfortunately I have a full, unused Tarte AC foundation that expires in February 2013. I've been blending medium and tan and have been rotating with other foundations so have t gone through them as quickly as I'd thought I would. I am not even ready to crack it open yet and is almos expired! My question is, do you think the expiration has to do with any part of it actually going rancid or more just because the SPF will lose efficiency? I can tolerate a less effective SPF, but not a bad or "off" product certainly. Thanks for opinions on this!
