@Jordan2 wrote:If you think I am too sensitive please feel free to tell me. I was watching a presentation of Dimitri's TTV yesterday (the hair set). He said something that I was bothered by. He was talking about hair coloring, how his shampoo and conditioner was gentle on it. He said box coloring is cheap, coloring your hair with box coloring looks cheap. He then said it doesn't do a good job, and you have a rainbow of colors on your hair. It also doesn't cover the gray well. I use box coloring. Do I use it because I love it, no. Money is tight for me and I make the decision to color my own hair, I rather spend the money on a haircut. I would love to get both my hair colored and cut, but I can't. Dimitri should realize not everyone has the funds to get their hair professionally colored. I just think it was an unkind thing to say, even if it might be true.
I'd ignore him. He doesn't have the final say on your choices.

If you're happy with your hair that's all that matters.
I totally agree with the poster who said choosing the right color and applying it properly are key.
He might do well to look in the mirror, better yet listen to one of his rants. His opinion wouldn't phase me in the least.

To OP: I totally understand your situation. For years I had to choose between color and expensive cut. I chose color. Then I found a very reasonable stylist and now go to her for a cut (I'm able to stretch it to three months) and a colorist.
He's always been in high end shops. He used to do Julia Child's hair and told me I shouldn't judge his work by her hair color because she'd walk in to any salon when she was traveling for color. He'd see her on TV and dread her next color visit.
He said that both salon color and home color have advanced enormously and many women do a great job. Men are also coloring their hair at home now.
I've seen some really bad salon color and some really good home color. I wish I could do it at home. My hair is the most expensive thing I own right now!

I do think you are being too sensitive. A host or vendor opinion is just their opinion and is simply designed to sell their product and isn't directed at you personally. Just continue to do what is right for you financially and choice wise and hold your head high. I've known women who use the box color and frankly it looks just as nice, and in some cases better, than the ones I've seen who spend a fortune to get their hair colored. Women often let their stylists talk them into doing things with hair color and highlights that are not flattering. Also, the fact is that box coloring is so much better now than it was years ago.

It was a general statement by someone trying to sell a product. I like that you have chosen your priorities and live on a sensible budget. Don't be offended.

This is a guy selling hair products and who is a professional. It is his job to sell his product and promote his businsess. I know a lot of people who color their own hair and it actually looks beautiful. It is like anything else if you know what you are doing and you take your time while doing it then you get great results. It is like when I go to get my pedicures done the woman always comments and so do other customers and techs in the salon that I have the most beautiful nails. Well guess what I do my own manicures and have since I was twelve years old. LOL Don't give a second thought to what someone on TV selling their products and promoting themselves say. You know if your color looks good to you or not and that is what matters.

No, I do not think you are overly sensitive. I like watching the Skinn shows and I find Dimitri very entertaining. He's got a good sense of humor. I also like his products. I also heard what you heard: He went on about box color and how it looks cheap, etc., and I was surprised. I thought while hearing this that he was offending a lot of people who successfully color their hair at home. He doesn't sell hair color, but he was selling his TSV shampoo, conditioner, etc., so I guess the point was that these products will help your home-colored hair look less "cheap"? I hope he will think about what he said and that he will regret having gone off on an attempted "comedy routine" at the expense of those who color their hair at home. A LOT of people successfully color their hair at home. I don't color my hair, but if I did -- especially at home -- I know I would have been gripped by insecurity after hearing him ... checking out my hair in a mirror for "spotty color deposits," etc. It felt surprisingly mean-spirited to hear him say what he did -- I was taken aback.

If I thought my hair looked bad, I'd probably believe him and listen to what he had to say about his products. If I thought my hair was looking good, I'd ignore him.
