I'm 61 and the same thing happens o me...the painful blind pimples that sometimes turn into whiteheads.
I tried everything...changed toothpaste...rinsed my chinn really well after brushing...changing products...cleaning the phone with alcohol...nothing helped. One would clear up on one side of my chin, then another would erupt on the other side.
I was at the derm the other day and mentioned it to him. He prescribed a low dose of Doxycyline and a topical ointment (creamy) to apply daily. He said the feedback on the ointment was pretty good. It's called Aczone 5%.
Good luck...I know how frustrating it is.

Thanks, everyone! It brings me comfort to know I am not alone. I hate for anyone to go through this. I never had bad skin as a teenager or adult. I would get an occasional small blemish but it was nothing. To think that I am this old and getting something like this is just unbelievable. It's very cruel! I have another week or so before I go to the derm. It's also cruel that they make you wait so long before they see you.
I am very careful what I use also. At least I think I am. Very minimal products and nothing heavy or scented. I have a feeling something weird is going on inside my body that has nothing to do with what I am putting on the outside.
Thanks so much for all your concern and for sharing your stories here!

Mine started with a breakout that wouldn't go away. The derm's nurse said "I didn't know you had cystic acne," which was news to me -- I didn't either. It turns out that it is a staph infection... if one reads up on staph, one will find that it can be very difficult to control.
What works best for me are two things: 1) ABSOLUTELY no hands on the face (if I put them on my face, there will be a place there a day from now and 2) very low 2% benzoyl peroxide(ever vigilant so apply all of the time even during the day -- staph apparently do not like any place that is dry. So they go away. HTH
edited to add "ever vigilant"

Angelpuppy, so sorry you are going through this. I also suffer from these types of breakouts on my chin since going through menopause - in addition to ultra sensitive skin and rosacea! Products with a silicone base will also cause deep, painful undergrounders for me.
When I get multiple, persistent breakouts like you have now, the only thing that works for me is oral antibiotics.

Something a person definitely doesn't need when you get older are products which dry the skin out! Which I think most acne products do. I am starting to show some improvement (knock on wood), but I am really curious to find out what the derm.'s diagnosis and approach will be. I will post when I find anything out.
I am sorry for all of you who have these chronic problems. They are definitely very trying and affect your confidence. Well, at least they do mine.
Thank you all for your kindness.

On 12/11/2014 AspenGrove said:Angel, according to my derm, breakouts specific to the chin are almost always hormone related, which is why they often happen for us women over 40 or so. It's all related to our changing hormone levels/ratios. Whenever it has happened to me, I use a dab of Mario Badescu's pink drying lotion, followed by a dab of drying cream at night. By morning, the pimple is greatly reduced or completely gone.
I agree; I've heard that outbreaks on the chin are mostly hormone-related. I sometimes get extremely painful spots of cystic acne (never comes to a head, just hard, red, and painful) on my chin that come and go. I use Mario Badescu, too, but for cystic acne, crush up an aspirin and mix with a little bit of water to make a paste. Dab that on the spot. Leave it on, and repeat every 4-6 hours as needed. It will reduce pain and swelling. It really works, and it's inexpensive.
