I think 40 is a little young, but maybe 50 or so. I was watching a Younique presentation lastnight. The presenter said there are no rules in makeup, women should wear what they like and feel comfortable in. IMO, that's a selling strategy because she has to market to a broad audience. The presenter is in her early to mid 50's and used shimmers in her demo. She didn't look bad per se and can still get away with it.
I personally believe that some of it has to do with a woman's overall appearance, if she looks her age or not, and the condition of her eyelids. Someone could be on the younger end, have bad lids, and shimmery eyeshadow isn't going to work well for her. I'm 60 and tried playing around with a couple of palettes I hadn't used in awhile. Whew, that was bad. I've never used metallics, but even some shimmers are way overboard. Those palettes got pitched. For me, I prefer matte or maybe a very light shimmer or satin, but that's as far as I go. My eyelids are in pretty good condition. I use skincare products on them and exfoliate them, to keep them smooth. I also use an eyeshadow primer.
Colorwise, I usually stick to lighter shades in brown/taupe/champagne or grey and light charcoal as my go-tos, but I'm not opposed to using some colors. The one big change I've made is that I don't use traditional eyeliner anymore. I will smudge some eyeshadow on the lash line for the smokey eye effect, and sometimes I go underneath the top lash and tightline with a flat angled brush. For me, I find that it makes the lashes look fuller w/o taking up good real estate on my eyelid, if that makes sense.

I have always had a very light hand with makeup.I can't say I can remember what I was doing 30 years ago when I was 40 in regard to MU. As my hair has greyed I have gone much lighter with shades, and with eye MU because my complexion has changed a lot and I think it looks better to wear less. I feel older women wearing a lot of MU look rather clownish. Since I prefer my MU to look as natural as possible I have never been attracted to or ever used any shimmer products.

Yes I have really changed my daily make up routine--don't wear any at home and just a touch when I go out. I don't work anymore either. Worked with the public so needed to look good. At 63 I have very nice, smooth skin ,all from excellent genes, so I concentrate on skincare. But when I dowear make up, it is light and natural, neutral and ALWAYS--24/7-- wear SPF.

@JeanLouiseFinch. Tightlining makes perfect sense to me at any age...makes lashes appear thicker, too. If you’d like to add a bit of shimmer, try a light shade just in center of lid over your shadow...opens the eye.
Unfortunately, many YouTube makeup artists have no professional training....choose wisely who you follow.

@151949 The simple explanation is that when our hair loses melanin, so does our skin. It becomes lighter on most women to compensate. Many women who have worn heavier foundation and/or brighter colors when younger, feel naked when introduced to a lighter, more natural look. It takes time to adjust. It sounds like you’ve done the perfect look for your complexion.

@wagirl I’m sure you’ve heard me preach about SPF. Without it, you undo everything your skincare is trying to accomplish. Good for you.

Yes, @Shanus, sometimes I'll do that little touch of shimmer right above the pupil, pressed on with a spongey flat or paddle applicator.

@JeanLouiseFinch That’s perfect. Just what I meant.

Actually, it is the opposite for me. When I was in my 20s and 30s, I wear very light makeup. But now in my 40s, I have to go heavier on my makeup because of my skin issues (acne and discoloration) that started in my 40s.
