@SloopJohnB wrote:Just like most things in life, everything is relative. With no exaggeration, there is not a day that I turn on the news to find that there are shootings and other crimes. Not even talking about national news. Locally here in South Florida, there are top stories of some shooting and often times killing here in Miami and Ft Lauderdale areas daily. And those are only the ones that make the news.
Used to be able to leave your car doors unlocked, even house unlocked. We always locked up, but many didn't. Not the case anymore.
As is evident today, we still have wars. And there are still some assassinations, not as heartbreaking as JFK, RFK and MLK, perhaps, but murder continues. Unfortunately.
I agree with you. There has never been any decade without war, public uprising, etc. If people think that things have changed for the better in these modern times they are delusional.
@lgfan Yes and while it's true that we didn't have the 24 hour cable news cycle or the internet, we still had daily news and newspapers. I have worked at a PD for over 4 decades as my then husband and I have seen crime escalate through the years.
Actually crime has been trending downward over the past 3 decades. I know that doesn't track with certain narratives, but facts are facts. I call that delusional.
Figures lie and liars figure. There are also many crimes that go unreported for various reasons.
"Less than half of all crime is reported to the police— about 47% of violent crimes and about 40% of property crimes.psychology.iresearchnet.com/forensic-psychology/victimization/reporting-cr"There has always been under reporting of crime, and I would dare say there was more in the past than today because of changing ideas around certain types of crime. So the impact of un reported crime transcends these figures and does not change them.
The "figures lie" quote is common among those who prefer dogma over facts, reason and logic.
You would dare say it but does it make it true. Since you are so good at giving facts where is your verification.
Rape is the violent crime that is significantly under reported. Here you go...

@Love to Run You are so right about those under reported crimes.
Just today, on our local news, they were talking about cold case rapes. There were two very young girls who were victims. The perp is on trial for committing the same horrendous crime against two other women.
Unfortunately, the 15 year statute of limitations has run out for the two women. With the young girls, there was no DNA evidence, so the defence lawyer is trying to get the case thrown out. That means that this monster could be free to do the same thing to other girls and women.
I think that in these crimes, there should be no statute of
limitations. That law should be changed. Years ago, women were afraid to report these things, especially if the perp was a "friend" or family member.
Others may not report for fear of not being believed, "he said, she said". Maybe they are afraid of retribution or just don't want to relive what they went through. Many people blame the victim, for the crime committed against them.
Now, with DNA, it is more likely to get a conviction, but it is too late for the victims of years ago.
I know of three past unreported cases among my own relatives. Two were children.

The Good Old Days or the Bad Old Days depends on each individual's lived experience. My parents lived through WWII, I lived through the Vietnam War. Thousands of years ago, there was war, poverty, depravity, goodness, love, compassion. The same is happening today. We are all witnesses to that at this very moment. About 2,400 years ago, the Qoheleth (Solomon?) wrote:
What has been will be again,
what has been done will be done again;
there is nothing new under the sun.

In the end there are the people who have happy memories of prior decades, and those that experienced the strife and stuggles of that decade. There are good things and bad things that have happened in each decade. Our ages at that time helped to dictate what we saw and experienced. Kids were far more sheltered from some of the ugly things that went on in each decade.
We did not have instant news, messaging, ability to call from anywhere, and watch the kinds of programs and movies we do now. Hate to break someone's bubble but there are far more car jackings, thefts and mass murders now. The kids comitting the car jackings are as young as 11. The mass smash and grabs were not going on in the 50s, 60s, and 70s or even the 80s. Stores were not wiped out of all goods on their shelves. There was more morals and respect. Plenty of people out there cannot imagine the things that are being accepted as normal now, happening back then. Again every decade had it's turmoil, strife and issues and wars. It depends on your age during those time periods, and what you were exposed to. Some don't have the warm fuzzies of those decades and it's totally understandable. So sometimes to bring up the "good old days" isn't always going to make for all happy posts. I personally enjoy the different perspectives on each decade.

Thank you. Not everyone always chooses to look at everything from a global or historical context. Sometimes, we choose to look at things solely through our own eyes and based on our own experiences and as long as we keep in mind at some level that there is a larger context there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Based on that, I agree, decades past seemed far preferable in many, many ways.

The good old days for me was when I could slap butter, cheese, chocolate, or gravy on absolutely everything and not have a worry in the world. Pure bliss.

The good old days for me were summers. No school and I could wake up late. I would actually get physically ill with stomachaches every fall when I had to return to school.
