" Stepped up security?" REALLY???

I am surprised as to why we have '''stepped up security'' when there is a disaster as in Brussels.  Perhaps if there was ''stepped up security''  ALL THE TIME, this bombing wouldn't have happened.  Why is not EVERYBODY at the highest alert of security on a regular basis????

Do you remember the weeks after 9/11? I went to the airport just two weeks after and there were military men in uniforms with rifles all over the airport. Security was VERY difficult and we were not even allowed to bring so much as a nail clipper in our bags. Now you can bring nail clippers and the military isn't carrying rifles all over the place.

And that's why we don't have the highest levels of security at all times. When we have to have uniformed men and women with automatic rifles all over and can't carry a nail clipper, life is pretty bad and the terrorists win. They don't win when they kill us, they win when they make us live in fear, surrounded by armed guards and unable to bring a nail clipper on a plane. They win when they turn our world into their world of guns and fear,

I wouldn't be at all offended with seeing the military carrying rifles at the airport or any other places these days.  It's a sign of the times and I am very grateful for any and all kinds of protection, seen and unseen...the more, the better I say.  Ask the families of those victims in Brussels - or the 911 families left behind and see how they feel about it now.

There is no fool-proof way to prevent terrorism.  Israel has led the way in doing the best possible but even they can't totally prevent attacks.

What's wrong in this country is that so many here don't want to pay for security.

I don't know if you remember or not, but several years ago we had color coded security alerts.

Green, yellow, orange, red.

We were at level orange for YEARS.

At first people were on guard, but as more time passed, and nothing happened, they became complacent, to the point that they forgot what "level orange" even meant.

The only way that I see to really secure our airports is to have the kind of security that Isreal has at their airports, and I don't see that happening because of how much money it would cost, and people wouldn't want to give up that much of their freedom just to fly.

There not enough law enforcement to walk around with A-K's 24/7/365.

That's why they rely on the public to bring something to their attention.

Remember, if you see something unusual, say something.

EXACTLY!  Congress doesn't want to pay for it!  People forget that the sequesters, that many citizens supported, are still in effect. Our military forces, and agencies responsible for our security, have drastically felt the cuts.  People in this countr can't have it both ways.

My opinion is if EL AL does it, everyone should be doing it.  Their security level is the highest. And, frankly, I wouldn't mind if the Mossad was involved, too.

There is no way to tell where the next attack will occur.  I don't understand your objection to increased security.  The US has been attached before.  This is not going to be isolated to European targets in the long run.

There are several reasons why we can't have the same type of security that El Al does.

1.  Money.

There are hundreds of airports across this country, and to have that kind of security would be cost prohibitive. We're talking billions of dollars.

2. There is not enough law enforcement officers, National Guard, to staff every airort in this country 24/7/365.

3. People are not willing to give up more freedoms in order to fly.

You might be willing, but trust me, not everyone is. On a daily basis, I come across people who throw a fit because they can't take their oversized liquid through security. If they get upset over that, then you know that they won't want to give up even more freedoms.

And how much more can they do without physically searching us, anyway?

They could move the drop off so that people would unload passengers a mile away from the airport and we'd all take a shuttle from there to the airport, but someone could just bomb that place instead. Meanwhile, everyone else has another hour added to airport check in to prevent something that happens so rarely.

There is simply NO way to keep us 100% safe, but it's pretty clear to me that they are doing a good job of keeping us as safe as they can at airports.

While every terror attack is terrible and I'm sorry for anyone killed in such an attack, I will never understand the call to go over the top to prevent terror attacks when 30,000 people in the US are killed by a gun every year and people don't seem to want to do anything about that.

You are more likely to be killed in a movie theater or at a school or place of work by someone not associated with a terrorist group than by any terrorist organization.
