Wed.night I got a call from someone who claimed to be from the fraud dept. of my credit card company...She had a lot of info about me and my family..I was nervous just didn't seem right ..She gave me a # to call her back which didn't work..She did this about 3 times...She spoke very fast.

She claimed there were charges on my acct. from 1 store..they were small amts. so there shouldn't have been red flagged...

I called the credit card company's fraud dept...there person I spoke to said there were no charges to the store that was named..He closed my acct. and is sending new cards..via UPS...he also told me to notify my banks to make sure no one can make electronic withdrawals on any acct. and to notify my phone company and local police.

The woman called back  again to tell me they were having phone issues..I told her I called the fraud dept. my self and was told the charges were bogus.. and she hung up.

Whether the phone call I got was bogus or not..just be careful when someone calls you about an acct.

Thanks for the info, it's a scarey world right now. Our primary card was compromised 2 weeks ago, there were 40+ charges on it . . . all were less than $10 and they originated somewhere internationally.

@Jo1313  Always remember they will never call you.  You would always get notified in the mail or email depending on how you have your notifications set up on the website.  Just hang up, and check your accounts and call your card holders directly if you are still nervous.  No one needs to answer anything on a phone call period.  You did good.  😊 Block that number.  Yes they will use another number but that's one less.  And always call your card company directly no matter how much info they seem to have. 😊

@Jo1313 First I probably would never have answered my phone.  We still have a landline and get annoying calls all the time.  On my iPhone I utilize the "block unknown callers" feature so they can leave a text and I can see that someone called but it will not ring and bother me.

However I find it unsettling that this person had a "lot of information about you & your family".  What sort of information are you talking about?  Did she know more than your names & addresses?  If so, I would call the phone company to make sure they don't try to sim swap (Google it) your phone where they can get all of your information!  Change important passwords too!

I have notifications set up with my Bank for any and all charges related to my account. So, I get a text message after every transaction. Included in the text is the amt. and from who, with the Bank's main branch number to call if anything looks suspicious or unauthorized. Also good to set daily limit amounts on your account as a backup. There are many safeguards avail. through Banks these days to help avoid these situations. Also good to set your phone up for spam calls.

@Jo1313 --good for you for not falling into those dirtbags clutches!!! I had a landline until I moved in 2021 and would get all sorts of spam calls--prob everyday many times a day---but also had a spam detector from the phone company that let me know it could be possible spam. was so annoying tho--now I just use my Iphone as my primary phone and almost never get those calls. But I also have had my debit card hacked 2x since last Nov. My bank informed me of the first one and then I actually found out about the 2nd time myself-- and I put a pause on that card--so it couldn't be used again. So trust your gut--and always check your finanaces too. Also changed all my passwords--took alot of time but I feel better. Also enrolled in a monthly protection for all that thru my credit card. they moniter everything for me.

Just remembered one other thing to do--freeze all your credit reports-----you can unfreeze them when needed and it's easy to do.

I would never call back on a number given to me, even in a text and e-mail.  Once while traveling I received a text from my cc company and they gave me a number to call.  I pulled out my cc and called the number on the card.  It was answered directly by the fraud department!  They were very gracious.  Had shut my account down and even offered to overnight me a new cc to my hotel.

@haddon9   Often this information is on the internet. I googled a friend's name just to find out the current address so I could send a birthday card. What I saw was the current address and a list of prior addresses in different states where my friend had lived  and the names of relatives who lived at these addresses in the past and currently. Also their ages.So just to say this information is out there not always but in maany cases. it doesn't take much digging to find it once you have a name and a current city.

I answered my phone the other day because I was expecting a call back. Unfortunately it was a scammer. He said good Morning Nancy (not my name).  I stopped him in his tracks telling home that since he didn't have my name right he obviously didn't know me. He hung up.
