If you take it to a local mechanic you really have to know who you are taking it too. There's no fall back here. There's really nobody to call and complain to.
Been there, done that. Don't do it any more.
Went to a dealership once for a repair on something, can't remember what, ac was working. As I pulled out of the lot, white stuff came out of the vent along with no cold air.
I went back in and said ac wasn't working but was when I came in. They said we didn't work on it, and I said but it was working, and pulling out of your shop isn't working. They weren't thrilled but it happened on their watch and they fixed it.
I have found that a relationship goes a long way and I was a regular customer--so I got lucky and it was a blessing for them to not argue.
Just saying, find somebody good for car repair and stick with them.

My 2008 car has been serviced solely by the dearler that I bought it from, and it's been a wonderful experience. They do not charge me to diagnose problems. Pricing has been competitive and fair. I have run flat tires, and their price per tire is roughly $75 less than other options in the area. I've paid nothing to have bulbs replaced. They always have a service loaner available when I have scheduled service, and have made a car available to me about 75% of the time when something has come up that's needed immediate attention.
I won't be so naive as to insist that all dealerships are wonderful just because I've had a great experience, but it's not fair to paint them all with the "don't go to the dealer" brush either.
I have family in the car business for five decades. Many of them have worked for dealers over the years. I've worked at dealerships. If service writers don't sell, they're out of a job. The margins are so small on new car sales sometimes it's the service department that's keeping the business profitable. It's not an opinion, it's a fact that new car dealers over sell and overcharge, especially women and the elderly. Many people in those groups don't know where else to go except the dealer. This thread is a great example of that.
As far as your experience, scheduled services at dealerships is a rip off, hundreds of dollars for a LOF and they inspect a few other things, fluids, belts, tires. Then they tryy sell you work you don't need. That's the reason they can afford to give you a couple of bulbs and a free loaner car all the time. Tires are always more expensive at a dealer than at Costco and most independent tire shops. The dealer is a middle man.
You really don't know if you haven't been ripped off unless you're a mechanic or you got estimates for all those services since 2008 from an honest independent mechanic.
When I was visiting my cousins shop a few weeks ago a woman in her sixties was there lamenting the Toyota dealer just told her she needed $3000. worth of repairs that she didn't need.
As long as you are happy with what you've paid that's all that counts.

I had a previously vehicle that the ac went out in. I took it somewhere to have it looked at, hoping it just needed to be charged. It did not. The entire compressor was bad. It order for the dealer to fix it, the cost was going to be $3,000.00. The car wasn't worth it. Luckily, my DH was able to fix it himself for under $1,000.00.

Just because a few choose to rip off vulnerable people does not mean they all do. There are many good dealers and people with integrity out there.

@LuvsmyfamMy air went out in June. My son heard about a product they sell on Amazon, and bought it. I kept my appointment, but let him try it. Well I have ice cold air conditioning in my car and it is August! It worked, and I cancelled my appointment. It cost about $60. If you have a leak it will seal it.
