Re: Your Opinion

[ Edited ]

I think the tip is based on the service provided and not the length of time you've been seeing the hairstylist. I've been going to my hairdresser for many years.  I understand how expensive it can get.  I'm retired now so I have to watch what I spend.  I needed a hair cut in Dec but held off until Jan. I live in a high cost area so I tip the hairdresser $20 and the shampoo person $5.  At some point I may need to go to a cheaper salon.  However, it took me a long time to find a good hairdresser so I'm afraid my hair would pay the price.  Smiley Sad

I would feel bad not tipping as it contributes to a person's livelihood.  I figure if I can spend money to shop qvc then I should have my ducks in order so I don't shortchange someone else.

No, you are not obligated to tip. The stylist though may drop you as a client.

Hairdressers rely on tips to make a living.  My hairdresser since 2003 has been at what I consider a price-gouging salon for a couple of years.  I still tip her 20%, though it is far higher in dollars than before when I would tip 25%+ just four years ago.  The price of electricity has gone up a lot, which adds HUGELY to a salon's expenses.

@cotton4me, ITA that the tip is based on the service provided and everything you said.

IMO considering "cutting" out the tip is selfish.  Be happy to have a good stylist and are in good health to make it to get regular haircuts.

I have been with the same hair dresser for about 10 years now. She is great and I always appreciate her opinion when I want to change it up a little. She found the perfect color for my hair also. I tip her 20% each visit and it's well worth it. She does the washing also so I don't have to tip another person for that service. If you really like your stylist I would try to save some money some other way so that you can continue to see her without worrying about the tip. Look at it this way, why waste your money on someone else and not be happy with the cut. $7 is considered a pretty low tip around here, maybe you could bump it up to around $10. With times being as they are, I think hair dressers will be happy with any amount they get and you will not be judged.

Add me to the group that says how long you've been going to a stylist shouldn't matter when it comes to tipping.  I have a great stylist and I tip well bc I never have to worry about receiving a bad cut.   I could go to a cheaper place (and often do in the winter bc I've moved about 1.5 hours from my longtime stylist) but the cut is never as good.
