No, this person is not a service worker but a paid employee.  People take this tipping business too far.  Some people would tip their doctor or kid's teachers.

NO!

We have totally mis-used tipping.  Tipping is for someone going over and above the expectations of their job!!!

Nowadays, people tip waiters/waitresses, hairdressers, the clerk in the coffee shop who hands you a coffee to go.  It has become more a part of paying a portion of one's wage.  This is wrong; and, it takes away the sincerity of a thank-you for going above and beyond the norm.  Tipping should be used to show your appreciation for superlative work or accommodation - not to add to one's salary!

Do you tip the cop who pulls you over and gives you a ticket?  S/he's doing her/his job, but I assume you'd be arrested for attempting to bribe a law official!  (ha,ha!)  Do you tip your dentist for filling a cavity?  The guy's job is doing your roof, etc.  If you are extremely satisfied, call his employer and express your satisfaction.

Where I worked the company stopped businesses from giving us bottles at Christmas as they did not want it to appear nor require special treatment.  Many/most companies do likewise.  It seems certain industries, e.g. salons, restaurants, etc. put a burden on their employees/customers rather than pay a fair wage.  I tip 'cause I have to and frankly only 'cause I have to- it's the norm.  However, went to a new hairdresser after getting a botched job by former one (whom I tipped) and tipped her very well and was glad to do so as she went above and beyond her job - aside from doing a good job she worked me in - that's what tipping was meant to be.

Yes, whatever you feel is fair.

I gave him $20.00  I feel good about it.  Thanks for all the opinions!  it is hard these days to know what is the right thing to do. I think you just do it because you want to....not because  you are suppose to or not.
