We have a penny jar so I would have rinsed them off and put them in the jar.

I was cleaning up a desk this morning and came across a container with five pennies in it.   They were sticky, something had gotten on them. Stuck together....gross....

My first thought was to toss them out.... and move on to the next cleaning project.......but, a lesson my mother taught me as a little girl about respecting money made me do otherwise..( As a little girl, I  threw a penny away that I picked up off of the ground, and I was scolded big time for doing that).

Instead of tossing the pennies out, I cleaned and dried them off and put them in my coin purse.

I wondered  how many people would find that odd and a bit neurotic the act of washing 5 pennies.....what do you think?  My feelings will not be hurt if you want to find it a bit odd Smiley Happy

@SeaMaiden

Your mother sounds pretty much kike my mom when it came to money? If I see a penny I pick it up, regardless of it's condition. My mom taught me at a very young age, the value of all denominations of money, and that for me not to expect it to come easy during my life.

She also taught me, while money is important in life, that relatives and friends are of more value during my life than how much money I have. That is the way I have, and still live my life. Money is not even close to the top priorities in my life, and never will be.

Odd what you did? Not in my way of life.

I would feel weird to throw pennies away.

I would have have done the same thing you did

Throwing away money, to me, is kind of disrespectful

I always pick up pennies.  My son picked up a penny 5 years ago and the date on it was 1912.

I have a penny for every year that my husband and I have been together.  It's kind of neat to take them out and look at how many we have.

Every year when I get a shiny new penny with the year on it, it goes into our Anniversary Penny Collection.  It's so silly, but it's tradition now.  I have a pretty Limoges box that I keep them in.

I've been tempted to throw dirty pennies but never can. Doesn't seem right and I agree seems to scream that you don't respect money.

My precious husband used to say that, "if you take care of the pennies, the dollars will take care of themselves".  So true!

I would have done the same @StephaniM, I would have also checked the dates on them.
