@SeaMaiden wrote:I walk my dogs early every morning. Today I found mail scattered along the road... several Christmas cards and some mail that looked like bills perhaps. The Christmas envelopes were torn open.... the person who stole the mail probably looking for money or checks....The bills left intact. I am sure it was stolen out of a mail box. All from the same address. Although many of us in the neighborhood have locked mail boxes, many still do not. Mail theft is common.
I was going to go by the house that the mail belongs to tomorrow and give it to them. I guess I feel weird in that what if homeowner thinks I stole the mail or something? Who knows what people think anymore. Maybe I should just return it to the Post office instead......What do you think?
I would bring it to the police station or call their non-emergency number, and ask them what to do.
Tomorrow is a post office holiday, and they won't be open until Tuesday. If it were me, I'd like to take care of this asap. So calling the police is probably the first thing I would do.
If I knew the neighbors well, I might bring the mail over and hand it to them, suggesting they follow up with the police or post office. I wouldn't leave it unattended, though. If theft is a problem in your area, it might be taken. And I also don't think it adequately addresses the issue.

@GCR18I have already touched it....picking it up etc.
I've worked with some packages prepared by malicious people. You'd be surprized what the police can determine from an item that's been handlel by many people. Since pulling mail out of a mailbox is such an easy, unskilled crime theres a good chance the thief mighy have prints in the system already.

Call the post office. If you see the carrier you could also tell the carrier. Just get some advice. Personally I would find a plastic bag and put it in the mailbox where it belongs but probably th at might not make as much official impact. Or I would knock on the door and tell them it was found. So many options. I think it depends upon how comfortable you are with the neighborhood and the situation. Obviously I would be torn as to what to do.
We live rural so the mail carrier goes box to box in a white truck. Not sure how you get your mail.

If it was a neighbor near me I would take it to them and tell them where I found it - that is what I would hope someone would do for me.

I would call your district post office and talk with some towards the top of the ladder there. Tell them exactly what you found thus far, and let them start the ball rolling from there.
You are not a detective or a thief, and any mail offense is a Federal Offense. If they need further information from you, I am sure they will ask you for those things.

I would take it to the police. You never know some lazy post office worker might just send it on to the people it belongs to, not wanting to deal with the paperwork involved. I'm just saying.....
Often there are groups that do things like that (in big cities). My daughter who lives in a large city in Va had a neighbor call and said she saw groups of women in cars riding around opening people's mailboxes and called the police. I don't know what happened.

I would also call the police. This is a crime

You were considerate in salvaging the mail and personally, I don't think it should be up to you to follow-up the situation further. Give the mail to the intended recipient explaining you found it while out walking your dog. You might want to sugggest they consider alerting the post office or police.

If it had been me that found the mail I would not have waited 12 or more hours before asking for advice.
I would have either taken it to the neighbor immediately (depending how "early" in the morning or put it in their mailbox with a note.
I would not have held onto the mail for this length of time.
