I walk my dogs early every morning.  Today I found mail scattered along the road... several Christmas cards and  some mail that looked like bills perhaps.  The Christmas envelopes were torn open.... the person who stole the mail probably looking for money or checks....The bills left intact. I am sure it was stolen out of a mail box.  All from the same address.  Although many of us in the neighborhood have locked  mail boxes, many still do not.  Mail theft is common.

I was going to go by the house that the mail belongs to tomorrow and give it to them. I guess I feel weird in that what if homeowner thinks I stole the mail or something?  Who knows what people think anymore.   Maybe  I should just return it to the Post office instead......What do you think?

I would probably call the post office & ask what they advise.

I agree with @YorkieonmyPillow. That sounds like a good idea to me.

I would probably get a 8x11 envelope and put the mail in it.  WRite a note on the front unsigned explaining where you found the.opened mail and put the envelope on their doorstep.

I would put it in plastic bag, as to leave any finger prints intact, and bring it to the post office tomorrow.

@SeaMaiden I understand.  I was thinking it's illegal to tamper/take mail.  Who knows, maybe it's happened in the neighborhood before and this would blow the case open.  LOL

Actually @SeaMaiden, you should turn it in to the police. Mail theft is a big crime. I hope you haven't handled everything too much, because the same person's fingerprints will probably be inside the envelopes on everything they handled.

If you dont want to talk to the neighbor, the police  might make a list of the bills so that the homeowner can request a duplicate be mailed to them, so they aren't ruined by making late payments.

I would bring it to the post office and let them handle it.

I know it happens a lot here in this area. Especially this time of the year.  One other time I found mail but I was way  to far from home to have to carry it all.....so,  I just set  it atop someone's mail box hoping that they would take care of it.
