1. What surprised me most in getting older is so many friends and loved ones passed before me and I find myself alone.
2. Being a widow. Men my age want someone 10 or 15 years younger or they have one foot in the grave. I'm young at heart but some of the men my age want a nurse and a purse.
3. Everything goes south. Face ,body and everything else. Even moving to Florida is going south!
4. I find I have a sense of humor more now than when I was young. If you don't laugh at this stage of life just flush yourself down the rabbit hole.
5. I look in the mirror and say to myself who is that old lady stalking me? She goes every where . She's my shadow . She is me!
6. I am grateful every day when I wake up and I can feel my feet touch the floor. I am granted another day on earth to laugh, remember my memories and to love my children. Life is good even with all my dry skin and aches and pains. I'm still here.

i'm finding as time goes on that things i took for granted and things that i just naturally assumed are not necessarily true at all. nothing is forever and you can't count on anything.
you have to live your life every single second like it's the last.
omg....i sound so morbid! lol

THIS is the one that is most haunting to me (your #1 was my #6 on the first page).
Rarely does a day go by that I don't remember my friends and loved ones from childhood who enjoyed life so much and predeceased me.

@goldensrbest Your post made me a little sad. You are NOT alone! You still have your friends here, and you have your pets who love you no matter what. Yes, we lose people we love, but for every one lost, another appears at the door. You just need to open it!

When I was young, occasionally I felt a pain.
Now that I'm older, occasionally I feel pain free.
When I hear references to future events, like the Olympics or Presidential elections, I wonder if I will still be alive. My father lived to be 90 but my mother and sister died in their 40s. I just turned 66 and find myself fixated on how much longer I will be alive.

@Vickiv That made me laugh! I like your style.......keep it up and keep that sense of humor. It sure comes in handy these days!

Life is full of surprises always! As for getting older:
1. I love how much more aware I am of my own inner strength and, I'm not sure what word to use, something like sureness. Like I can see both my human self and my inner self more clearly and appreciate both.
2. The things I allow myself to fear, and the negative influences I allow to affect me, are all getting less all the time (well, maybe 2 steps forward and 1 back, but you know what I mean!).
3. I want as many things as ever, but I like the things I want more. I like more important things, maybe, and even when I want something trivial, I'm aware it's just for play and not a serious matter. In fact, I love it that everything matters AND nothing matters! Ain't that grand?
4. I'm always pleasantly astonished at how much I can stilll learn and change (whatever my knees are doing, "I" am as nimble as ever!). But I don't try to do as many things, and don't hold myself to the standards I once did, so it's all more fun. I know I don't need to be better. But I can be if I want to!
5. How am I doing? Oh, one more: I just understand so much more. That's always true for everyone, I guess, throughout life. But it accumulates, you know? Part of the fun and surprise is appreciating how much wisdom those younger than I am have, too!

I didn't buy into the looking old and frumpy after age 30.
Things I did for my health paid off.
I would like to have more energy like in the past.

I can remember my grandmother telling me, when she was about 90 years old, that every time she looked in a mirror she still expected to see a girl of 18 looking back at her. I can really understand what she meant by that now - time goes so fast. The older you get the faster it goes. It will be Christmas again in 10 days and it feels like it was just Christmas a couple of months ago.
