I went out onto my rear deck and there were a dozen or so bees, all dead, spead out. I'm feeling personally responsible but I don't know why. It's a very small deck and I don't use it for much except passage for groceries from the car. Any ideas?

Weather? Frost kills bees except for the queen bee. If there are any bee keepers in your area, you should ask them.
Another thing to consider. During bees mating season, once the queen bee is finished mating, all the male bees die. The new batch from the eggs will be the male workers who make the nest & fill w/honey.

Thanks for the reply. I never thought about the frost. Don't know any bee keepers.

There is a hive either on your property or very close to it. Could even be in your home. 10 days ago I had to have a hive removed from my attic. 40,000 to 60,000 bees was the estimate. I was finding bees all over my house, but they were not dead - they were unconscious. Once the temperature drops below 78 or 80 degrees they go in into an unconscious state. I had to call a bee keeper. It was a scary experience. I have since learned a lot. Had to seal all the little tiny holes (the size of a pencil eraser) so they don't come back in because their pheromones are so strong that the scent will bring another group of bees back. Good luck! I have nothing against bees, but I prefer they stay outside my home.

Not long ago I saw a documentary on the "dying off of bees." This is a global phenomenom and the cause is not understood.

@excpa Someone near you may have used a pesticide or herbicide of some sort on their trees or plants. You really should call someone with the local or state agricultural department and let them know. They want to know when people see a large bee death like this. That is how they found a landscape company using an outlawed pesiticide in trees- there were tons of dead bees below a tree and a person walking by called the state to let them know and they came out and did some tests and found the culprit. Bee death is a huge concern these days.
