What my mother taught me as soon as I was old enough to understand(working at 8 years old).

Be Independent! Never depend on someone, or something, other than yourself. That means happiness/financial Independence/and be knowledgeable about every aspect of your life. 

Life DID NOT teach me, that would be my mother. I chose to live real life to learn about it, not book life. For me it was the right way to go. Started working young, and retired while I was a young 52.
