@Still keeper of the koi  Love your post and  I was gonna write - I love fall too; however, it's the winter that follows that I hate.  I wasn't sure where you were from - cuz today is the first real day the weather is chilly/windy - but then I see you are from upper NY - I'm in DC burbs so I know its warmer here - but I'm still a wimp!  Oh, and keep your snowflakes!

@Still keeper of the koi  It's not very different than your beloved koi.  I look at fall like nature's way of preparing for rest.

It's a time for reflection and perhaps healing.

@Bird mama I agree that the cold frozen days are a time to slow down and rest.Maybe a time to reflect over the past year and to try to find a way to grow from all seasons passed.I agree that the winter is a great healing season when we spend more time cooking,visiting and enjoying the sanctuary that our homes provide.It can be blissful to be snowed in with a nice fire and a good book.

Re: What fall means, to me..

I live in Florida so it much like spring in the northern states, time to plant my garden.  Got some tomato plants and some seeds.  Busy this weekend.  I do enjoy fall as temps drop to the 60s at night and 70 days.  Perfect.

@Still keeper of the koi  A friend reminded me of the same thing last week.  I was saying that my 5 rosebushes were dead bc all the leaves were eaten up and he told me to buy some 2 in 1 systemic granules to sprinkle around the base and they'd recover.

I'd been so involved in other things and not paying attention and yesterday I was out walking and when I got to my driveway I actually stopped and took notice and, in the middle of the cold and wind I'd never stopped to realize that the roses had recovered and even after 2 nights of temps dropping below 32, there stood the most gorgeous red roses.  You really do sometimes need to just stop and smell the roses!  I'll make it thru the winter - I'll complain but I love to read and I use the winter to catch up on that.  Every time I complain how much I hate the cold I remind myself that I can't imagine not living in an area with four seasons and hey, at least it's not Alaska or some other very cold place!

@Still keeper of the koi

I understand your words and I envy you.  I'm shy and introverted, though the people I work with and interact with probably dont realize that.  It's the nature of my job to be outgoing and vivacious, so I've learned to fake it quite well.  It's emotionally exhausting and I'd always welcomed the winter months to pull back and re-energize for the spring and summer ahead. I've lived almost two decades now, in a climate that doesn't allow for that.  It's very difficult for me and I enjoy the time change because it's the closest thing I have to "winter".   Yes, we get some days here that are quite cold, but the overall mindset is different.  Nothing slows down. There is no distinction between the seasons in that emotional way you describe. If my husband and I are able, we'd like to retire to a place that has four seasons. Upstate NY, in my opinion, is one of the most beautiful places on Earth.  Enjoy your winter.  I'd love to see photos of those bulbs when they emerge in the springtime.
