Like them or not, they are a form of competition for a segment of the population. As long as they are willing participants who am I to say what they do. There are competitive eating contests, horse racing, boxing matches etc... none of these appeal to me however they do to others. Don't know why people feel the need to tell others what is or is not appropriate.

Or how about prancing our elected officials in swim suits or speedos during their election campaigns. I want a buff, smart, handsome dude representing my country.
We had one. Brainy too. Miss him so.

Have you ever, Ever seen an out of shape contestant, in a major beauty pageant? Of course some women have better bodies than others, but that can also be in the eye of the beholder.
One judge might like very thin, another might like trim and athletic, another a wee bit a feminine roundness. I have Never seen a contestant that even remotely came close to being overweight or out of shape! I
have certainly never seen a contestant, look anything but lovely in their gowns. Hideous! Give me a break!
As for talent, I have to admit, IMO, the talent was long, on the boring side, and while the women were usually OK; impressively talented? Not so much.
