Re: What do you consider Old Lady clothes?

I think I've read all the replies in this thread.

I have to say, I'm surprised there's anything that we can wear that doesn't qualify for "old lady" clothes.

It seems the entire line of so many well-known brands have been added to the heap.  Plus, elbow-length sleeves on teeshirts?  Who knew?

Sparkles and embroidery are out; fabric blends (polyester?  spandex? rayon?) are out.  Large floral prints.  Small floral prints.  Stripes.  Color matching.  Seersucker.  Flat shoes.  Sneakers (Keds?).

Well, gosh, the list seems endless.  Perhaps we should all join a nudist colony and give up on clothes entirely.  Then what would we find to criticize?  Hmmm...doesn't bear thinking about!  Woman Surprised

@Venezia - I was also suprised at some of the responses.  I think dressing "old lady or matronly" has to do with the individual.  Two people can wear the same thing and have a completely different look according to how it's styled and accessorized.

Interesting to think that because someone cares about her appearance that degrades someone else.  Not true IMO.  Why don't people understand that like it or not, what you wear projects who you think you are?  I am a positive, life-loving, confident person and how I look, dress, act, and speak should project that image simply because it's who I am.

@sandy53 I agree!  I could never understand why some have given up on their appearance unless they are suffering from depression or a serious illness that takes up all of their energy...I get that.

However to just not care what others think simply because you're going to do whatever you want without any regard to how you present yourself to the world is not something that I understand.  For that matter why bother at all?  Why not just roll out of bed and go your merry way?  I think that's sad that some just don't seem care.

I care about my appearance,  I also care about my home and how it looks as well.

You just need to read the responses to see that many care more about their appearance.  Which is just fine, however looking down on others and making judgements about them simply because they didn't wear something that you feel appropiate is wrong.  People should not have to live by your standards.  There are lots of people who may not be able to wear the latest fashions or they simply do not like them.  People spend way to much time, energy and money trying to impress others.

WOW, so now those who violate your fashion standards are depressed or ill.  OK,  that is not judgemental.

But some of us are positive life-loving, confident people, who dress in a way that makes us comfortable and fits our life-style.

Maybe I just am not particularly concerned about how strangers perceive me, so long as my friends, family and co-workers see me as how I am.

I'm not sure my community of friends, co-workers and family are particularly concerned with the image we project ... but more how we treat each other, and perform our jobs/responsibilities to each other and our community.

Nothing wrong with being fashionable ... but nothing wrong with not being fashionable either.  .

Edited to add ... I truly can't imagine anyone thinking less of me for wearing pants with elastic waist bands or elbow length sleeves, or many other of the above-mentioned 'old lady' clothes.

Re: What do you consider Old Lady clothes?

As an old lady that just turned 82, this is all very depressing. Just what are we supposed to wear? Neat and clean are a priority. I wear pull on pants, button down shirts, all ironed and I think I look fine. Mostly Denim & Co. The only things to me that look old are poly pants with the seam down the front and too much lace. Trying to look too young for your age backfires. I prefer to cover my arms. They are not the best as you age, even thin ones. Wear what makes you comfortable but be honest with your choices. Someone is looking.

@CrazyDaisy Wow yourself!  I never said that one had to wear the latest fashions or be the best dressed.  Of course those who are not feeling well will not put their best foot forward.

As human beings we are all judged on appearance even if you think you're not judging most subconsciously are.  Right or wrong that is human nature.  Yet you have made judgemental comments even if you believe that you have not.

I agree with @CrazyDaisy.  Those statements sound judgmental to me.

I don't think it is sad at all that I don't really care that people might be judging me on my clothes, or my car, or my house for that matter ...

That doesn't mean that I think you are wrong for your attention to your appearance and your pride in your house .... it just means that I don't feel the same way, and it's not a cause of 'sadness' or concern.
