If your SIL just had hip surgery and would be better in a month, you might want to celebrate right before Christmas; maybe he would consider other options.

 

Some families celebrate on alternate days because of work schedules.

The biggest issue is getting to their home....not her surgery.  We live in the midwest, Christmas travel is never considered beause of the weather.
