It doesn't matter much what any of us thinks.  Mary is going to do what she'll do...whether it's eventually self-destructive, or she comes to her senses.  She's "technically" an adult.

John's parents sound like they're in denial and John should have a warning label hanging around his neck.

Exactly.

She should chalk it up to a bad experience, and leave that area right away.  Her life is not there, and staying just invites unnecessary drama.  Far better to go back home, lesson learned:  Proceed more slowly next time and use common sense.

This can either be just a relationship that didn't work out, a blip on the screen of her life,or it can turn into a whole saga filled with angst that goes on indefinitely.  She can choose to heal and move on or she can choose to put her life on hold while pursuing him or punishing him.  It's her choice, and I hope she makes the right one.

I don't think these are intimate details.  They're simply facts that would not be unusual for family and friends to know.

After my head stopped spinning, I'd run as hard as I could.

I hope Mary gets over him and moves on, but not to his city and in with his parents....temporary or otherwise.

The entire thing, including the parents invitation to stay, is totally odd.  She should run as fast as she can the other way and stay away.
