I've never had that happen here in NYC ... and I eat out several times a week.

I've never had it happen in NYC, either.  Or anywhere else.

I'm not saying it doesn't happen, just that I would hardly call it a trend.  Some dishonest or incompetent people, maybe, but it's certainly not common or becoming the norm at all.

Re: This is a New Trend - I Think

I remember this as a problem with certain restaurants we frequented back in the big city.... but here (very small city) it happens infrequently and when it does it's because the cashier hasn't added/subtracted correctly or put the numbers into the cash register correctly and the person (when corrected, and DH is a math guy ~always~ corrects them, they have the decency to look highly embarrassed.

We've solved the problem (granted it is not a big problem... but it IS annoying and it adds up).  We always carry exact tip money we can leave on the table and we always carry a lot of change, being able to hit the exact amount most every time.

If this happened in any of DH restaurants the server would be terminated immediately. If it happened to me I would say to the server, that since I didn't receive my correct change they could consider that their tip. I've spent too many years in the industry to play these games.

I was at a convenience store a couple of days ago and the cashier gave me no change for something that cost $2.99.  I just stood there, so he took a penny out of their penny dish on the counter.  I want my change even if it's just a penny.  I won't be going there again.  It's not someplace I ever shopped at anyway.

Re: This is a New Trend - I Think

they know some people don't want to bother waiting for change and they are banking on that.  thats why they act surprised.   it started many years ago with some of my friends throwing out pennies.  then they will throw change in the shopping bag at the register and the bag got thrown out.  i would cringe and question.  they hated change.   these people were well-compensated and most were earning 2 or 3x their age. which at the time was a healthy income.   now they will use a debit  or credit card to buy a $4.39 latte or burrito
