TROPICAL DEPRESSION CHANTAL ACROSS MY AREA

OMG!!! Yesterday we had nonstop heavy rain beginning in the morning that became flooding across our part of the state. After several tornadoes, dams breaking and flooding out roads that buckled and bridges washed out, they declared it a Tropical Depression.

We lost power for awhile and most of our circuit breakers switched off. Of course no elevators and poor old Molly (diagnosed with Cushing's last week on meds, but has to pee very often) and poor old us had to walk down 3 floors to go potty...Molly, not DH. Lol

Where DH's first office was located is almost under water along with the nearby mall and elementary school and junior high where my kids went...flooded. Cars were stranded and abanded and people rescued from their homes in waist deep in water. At last report (I stayed up all night to keep track of the weather reports and areas to evacuate) there were no dealths, but we met a 70 yr. old man who needed to walk down from the 7th floor to get meds from his car and was lying at the bottom of the stairs holding his chest. I called 911 and stayed with him until they arrived with an EMS truck, firetruck and sirens blasting from the ambulance.

Our phones were beeping most of the night with emergency warnings and alerts to "shelter in place unless notified to evacuate...do not travel unless told to leave your home". Very scary!! Of course I had to keep my "ears" in or I can't hear if we'd need to evacuate. Very scary and not sure if we have damage here at the complex yet. I did see out our window that our lake where I walk the trails is over the edge and flooded the walkways.

So far, we have power and hope the 2 elevators are up and running soon. DH went down at 5AM to check the parking lot and see if our cars were flooded and had any damage...all OK there.

So we made the national news and I pray for all those who lost homes and property. I'm not sure when everything can be repaired.

We live about 4 miles from the University, but where my folks lived in Southern Pines/Pinehurst (a retirement, assisted living complexes and famous golfing resort) is under water. Rescue people worked all night to help people evacuate that area. Their dams didn't hold.

So, a long night and many many long weeks and months for people in our area to rebuild.

A shout out of prayers for the people in TX who also were flooded and the all the families who lost relatives especially the camp where children were drowned and never found. I just can't imagine that heartbreak.

How scary!  I hope no one was hurt and your power is restored soon.  It's got to be a big pain going down three flights of stairs.  Too bad there isn't a generator to over ride the power and keep the elevators going.

I'm not sure where you are?  Is it in the Carolinas or Gerogia?  Not familiar with Southern Pines area.

We had a lot of heavy rain a couple of weeks ago in SE PA with a 24 hour power outage.  Lots of large fallen trees....some are still down but have been moved over to the side of the roads.

My heart breaks for the people in central Texas.

@Shanus

Have you heard any updates on 85/I40 where the highway is flooded? I need to drive through that area of highway. It was completely shut down this morning. What we have is just a little hiccup compared to what they had in Texas. I feel so bad for them.

@tiny 2   I don't know. If you call the NC Dept. of Motor Vehicles they probably have that info.

@tiny 2 , does NC have 511 that you can Google. We have that in PA for road updates and conditions.

@Shanus.  Do you suppose you could train Molly to use a puppy pad?  If you could catch some of her urine to prime the pad, it might give her the idea.

They could come in handy on numerous occasions.

@Shanus  - What a scary time for you and your DH.  Hope that gentleman you helped will be ok.  Glad to know that you, your DH, and Molly are doing ok and sounds like your power has been restored.  So much tragedy going on right now, it's overwhelming.

Remember the poor people in and around Asheville when that storm and flood hit them in September 2024, and many were buried alive in the storm and mud slides and no help ever came to them except Samaritan's Purse and Elon Musk.  So very sad.  Elon gave them communication service and Samaritan's purse got the kind of help they needed.  None of their insurance companies paid anything.  Many had frozen to death before power companies from adjoining states could get them out.
