Many years ago my agency handled the travel for most of the Jewish clientele in town, including the Rabbi. We were invited to speak to several of the congregation's groups at the synagogue, we were honored to be asked. But because our knowledge was limited and we did not want to misstep I bought a set of books: "The Jewish Book of Why". Fascinating, beautiful and enlightening.

Hi  @We rescue cats   @Shanus

My Junior High S.Sch teacher took us to a Jewish Synagogue where we were given an indepth tour shared with a great deal of info.  Absolutely whetted my appetite to want to know more & more, that has lasted the rest of my life!  Esp since this is so closely related to our own pertinent growing knowledge.

Years later I met a guy at the Gym who it turned out was of this particular faith.  Our dates lasted hours & hours, all sharing abt this topic, relating to both our walks & talks.

There's much more interesting info to this particular experience, that I'd like to share, but I think that might be crossing a line for this QChat environment & rules.

@We rescue cats     I looked up "The Jewish book of Why" on Amz. Looks very interesting.  I'm going to get it.  Thank you for this suggestion!

I see now there's a Vol 1 & 2.  I'll start with Vol 1.  I would be surprised if this was not found at local libraries, (but I like to mark up my books that fill my head with info, & refer back).

Years ago, at Costco, I had my hands on a Talmud.  Read a lot from it there, an hour at least.  Since then, many, many times I wish I'd purchased it.   VERY interesting!  Maybe I'll get it now.

I soooo love knowledge.  Esp of this kind.  This simply only enhances my own ever-luvin growth & life living/lived.

FYI, at most Jewish funerals, a piece of clothing is torn to express grief and pain. It also represents a broken heart.

I just thought I'd share some info.

Where did this come from am I missing something

@I am still oxox - This tradition is first mentioned in the Torah or Old Testament in the book of Genesis. It continues to be mentioned throughout the Old Testament.

@beach-mom Thats not what I meant I was wondering why the OP decided to post it

@Shanus  Beach mom wasn't questioning why this was brought up, it was @I am still oxox.

There was a young woman who I saw in the very first days, a hostage taken, she was shown on video pulled from the back of a jeep (?) and shoved into the back seat.  It's a picture burned into my memory.  I hope she's okay.  I haven't heard anything about her.  It was heartwrenching to see.  I pray she was able to withstand what she was up against.  It was horrible...Woman Sad

Agree, it was a sabotage.  Unthinkable.  May that never happen again.

Re: TORN CLOTHING

[ Edited ]

Hi Folks  Woman Happy

My "Jewish Book of Why" (Book 1) arrived.  Amazing!

@We rescue cats    Thank you for introducing this book!

@Shanus   Thank you for starting this thread.

I've only briefed thru this new book, but already learned a lot.

I didnt realize the Torn Mourning Clothing means something whether its on the Right, or Left side of the garment.

Also, I was wayy wrong in the belief I had about the stomping on "the glass in napkin" at the Jewish Wedding ceremony, according to this new book!

Im going to really enjoy this book.  And just whets my appetite to again get that Talmud, (when I research which best one to buy).  This "Book of Why" refers to the Talmud a lot.

And a lot of explanations of these traditions, parlay well with my own, continued, in depth, seeking, working knowledge of the my/our companion Book.

What can I say, I have a hungry mind.  heh

Thank you!!  Woman Happy
