DH and I make homemade apple butter every fall. We use our crockpot to make it and then freeze it in small jars. I never buy apple butter in the grocery store; it's just not the same as homemade. We like it on bread, toast and with cottage cheese (think PA Dutch).

RECIPE – HOMEMADE APPLE BUTTER
Ingredients:
1 gal. Cider (boiled down to half gal.)
8 quarts apples (peeled, cored, sliced)
2 cups sugar (can use more or less, if desired)
Corn syrup, dark (1/4-1/2 cup)
Cinnamon, cloves, allspice – to taste (more cinnamon than cloves and allspice)
Directions: Boil cider down to half a gallon. Place cider in 6 quart crockpot. Add sliced apples gradually. Cook on high, then turn to low when apples start to cook. Add sugar, corn syrup, and spices. Cook until thickened in crockpot and/or oven set at 300 degrees. Stir often.
Note: If apples start to overflow in crockpot, move some to oven kettle and set oven at 300 degrees. Stir often, and then return to crockpot to simmer as space permits.
Note: We use a combination of apples. Cortland and McIntosh are favorites. Recipe freezes well.
