THE DOWNSIDE/UPSIDE OF GREY HAIR

[ Edited ]

No, don't go crazy. I'm not going back to my every 3 week color appointment. I've noticed there are several ways I've been "looked at" differently.

1. When at the food store, the bag people ask if I need the bags packed very lightly and if I need help taking the bags to the car. I quietly lift up my flat of 12 bottles of water and take it from the belt back into the cart. Mouths hang open.

2. Wait people ask if I need help swiping my card, figuring tip, etc.

3. A positive: In traffic, if I smile and wave, I'm more likely to be able to move over to the next lane w/o any obscene hand gestures.

Do you notice any negatives or perks when folks see you have grey hair? Are older?

For me the biggest negatives are I just don't like it for me and I don't want to be viewed as an old helpless woman because of it!!!

@Shanus   These are funny especially you picking up your water yourself. you should've really freaked them all out and started to raise them overhead as if working out w/weights.

Funny!

I'm approaching 70 and after coloring my hair for 20 years, I've let it go natural.  Currently, it's "salt and pepper."  Personally, if being perceived as "old" gives me any advantages, I'll take them!    There are so many disadvantages to getting old--LOL!!!!

I have noticeable grey at my temples when it's getting to be time for my 6 week root touchup. You should see the look on the faces of the cashiers and baggers when I easily grab two 40 pound bags of water softener salt (they have handles on them) and carry them to my car.

@PINKdogWOOD   The first time it happened, I was only silver for a week, I got "miffed". I had 2 six packs of beer bottles in my cart and I did do that...lifted them over my head...ready to do a set of 12, but seeing the look on their faces, I'd made my point. Lol.

It's not just the hair color, my diminutive size fakes them out, too. 😜

Re: THE DOWNSIDE/UPSIDE OF GREY HAIR

I hate myself in grey hair so that is the downside. I feel and look older so I will continue to color my hair for those reasons.

I look at some women with that pretty shade of white and admire it but it is just not for me.

Like everything else ..if you feel good and like yourself in grey hair ..good for you. If you feel as if you don't look your best (as I did) color it and make yourself happy.

@Shanus   People don't realize nor understand that some of us (I'm talking DH actually) due to genetics turn grey/snow white before they're 30 yrs old. This trait runs in his family, hit my husband right after we met mid twenties. He had brown ahir, then like overnight it turned white just like his Dad & his Mom. He and I would joke about him meeting me, hooking up and then it was me who made him turn snow white at such an early age.

I must also note, your #3 smiling prettily to be able to move over into the other lane, if those male drivers out there don't 'let' you, you can always just flip them off and not feel bad about it!!!!!!!!!!!!

@DREAMON   I didn't intend to begin a pro or con for grey hair vs. coloring hair thread. We've been there, done that.
